There is a gut-wrenching honesty to Louis C.K.’s comedy that makes it impossible to stop watching. One might describe Louie as a more relatable Curb Your Enthusiasm, but that would do the writing and the show a disservice because Louie is a real person (not a Hollywood bazillionaire) and seems to crystallize many universal but taboo ideas about life and death: like when little kids act like dicks, the reality of a bully’s home life, or the vindictive scare talk of the Catholic church. It’s all woven seamlessly together in a profoundly funny and honest way. Also, Louis C.K. directed Pootie Tang, so, he pretty much is a genius.

Kenny Powers is an epic, archetypal character living out one of the greatest lost-glory stories of all time. I’ve watched it three times now, and it keeps getting better. This is a crew that has hit a sweet spot, and it’s inspiring to watch their creation. Read more

I wanted so badly to like Parks and Recreation when it first came on; but it not only lacked funny, it was also pretty snoresville. So it was with great trepidation that I resumed watching Season 2, after hearing people everywhere say: ‘It’s really funny’. And now I say to you, dear reader, it is really funny. Read more

I think Jon Glaser is the driest comedian alive. He’s not for everyone, but I’m convinced that everything he does is genius (and funny). Delocated (produced by PFFFR, creators of awesome/fucked, Wondershowzen). What would already be a pretty funny show becomes even darker and more twisted with the addition of ‘Jon’s’ black ski mask and voice modulator. So what are you waiting for? Pranks, the bone zone, the wiggler, and more are waiting for you on Delocated.

I’ve always liked Yacht. Psychic City’s lackadaisical Tom Tom Club Street Pop blew my mind. But I just saw them live again, touring for their new record, and it blew me away. Jona is now leading the band and Claire is front and center. Imagine Brigitte Nielsen fronting the Rolling Stones. Synchronized dance moves, sincere crowd interaction, and a positive, deeply spiritual message that you can dance to. Yacht is the coolest band around. I love you, Yacht.

This is the perfect cartoon. It’s like a person with a well-developed personality. It’s gentle, and has a wide-eyed enthusiasm for pure imagination, but the characters use contemporary, up-to-the-minute slang and usually deal with insane situations in realistic ways. It is one of the most weird, creative, and satisfyingly entertaining shows I’ve seen in a long time. Also, the animation reminds me of late 80s computer games or something made on MS Paint. Read more

I used to have a Livejournal. I remember when blogging was so much more earnest and emo back in the mid-Aughts. Embarrassing. Good to know there are people like out_4_pizza, who use their blogs to post amazing digital art rather than every detail of their personal lives. Read more
UK-based one-man-band Sieben has a new album out: As They Should Sound. Frontman Matt Howden builds songs with a loop pedal and a violin, which he uses for rhythm and melody. His sound is wonderfully sophisticated and cabalistic, with a particularly British sense of lyricism.
