Hooked by the glamour of the city, the countryside is left behind. However, upon arrival, expectations are challenged by the sins of the city. This is a collaborative work of Nils Clauss from CONTENTed FILMS and Stuart Howe from STUDIO 163. This video, as the overall winner of the Genero Sincity competition, was chosen with the following comment: ‘Congratulations on a fantastic, original film that was entertaining from start to finish. A deserved winner’.

Farewells tells the story of on old couple that found the key to eternal life by vivisecting special fluids from insects. The problem, however, is that one of the two always is in a sort of coma while the other one prepares the shot needed to extend life. This means they can stay alive separately, but never share their love again. The old lady in the end decides to not go on with the procedure. She puts the shot aside and lays her head on her husband’s chest before they die together. The video was directed by Max von Lux, a master student at the University Of Arts in Linz, Austria.

‘America is a …’ is a blog about what America is not, more like what America was, used to be, and has become. None of these things are positive, but more importantly in these times, they are representative of the ever-shifting and eroding landscape of what was once a democracy or American exceptionalism.

A favorite photostream of mine by American born, Seoul-based photographer Aaron Choe. On his Flickr homepage he writes: ‘I can’t always be sunny honey, but I’ll always make you smile”. Fun and playful street photography shot on film that will definitely put a smile on your face’. Read more

Autumn Whitehurst creates beautiful vector works. Her bold use of colour allows her often cheekily themed line drawings to really leap out, creating a sense of visual serenity despite the occassionally dark subject matter.

We spoke to Dopepope about his latest Metal Man Project: ‘In the fifth grade, I drew a comic called Metal Man about a humanoid robot that went crazy and pulled knives on people. It’s the most ridiculous thing ever. I was a kid! Anyway, I found the artwork and simply traced the head and the logo exactly as I had them and fell in love with the iconic shapes they’ve created’. Last weekend I went to the Golden West in Baltimore to check out the What Cheer? Brigade, a marching band from Providence. I wasn’t expecting much, but when they opened with a cover of Slayer’s Raining Blood, my knees buckled. I think I could hear a musak version of that riff, and I’d still bang my head. The rest of the band’s set was just as riotous, with people dancing so hard, you’d think we were at Mardi Gras. I haven’t had that much fun at a show in ages.

Heavily influenced by music and film, the design team at Conquer Gear showcases their tees not as clothes, but indubitably as limited edition art pieces. That said, I wonder what film or music piece inspired Mr. Owl picture t shirt [below]? Led Zeppelin came to mind, but then so did Joni Mitchell!. As for film inspirations, Clockwork Orange, Lord of the Rings and Out of Africa. Hmmm, maybe I’m not so good at this afterall. Read more
