I came across the awesome pencil skills of Dilly a few years ago while photographing him for my skater project. We recently commissioned him to work his magic in a portrait of my partner Andy, and he didn’t disappoint. The final image is hyper-real and unsettling in its likeness to the subject.

Dilly’s project, The Mind’s Apocalypse, takes his distinctive approach a step further, finding beauty in the details of the portrait yet being repulsed by the gore of it. The self-mutilation by the subjects in these images, executed with such precision and beauty, means that I will never tire of looking at them.

As a student in London, I spent many hours at the British Film Institute dreaming of life as a cinematographer, before the red light of the college darkrooms seemed like a more inviting way to spend my days. Nothing compared to watching old movies on the big screen of the BFI.

Walkabout, directed by Nicholas Roeg, is one of their latest presentations celebrating 40 years with a digitally remastered copy. This movie may not be one of my favorites, but it has certainly left a lasting impression. I watched this film as a child with my parents, and the Australian landscape, so alien to my forest filled Scottish one, seemed like a daunting prospect for anyone to be stranded in, never mind a teenage schoolgirl and her fair-skinned brother (Roeg’s son Luc). It was a marker for the way I would view Australia as a very distant land filled with unsettling cinema, such as Picnic at Hanging Rock and The Long Weekend, where it was always desolate and hot, and a three hour drive was seen as a day trip. If you have the chance to see the new remastered version of Walkabout, it will be time well spent watching a more innocent era when a young boy would discover you in the outback rather than a hook wielding serial killer.

My love of otherworldly woodland spaces and wallpaper have at last been realised in the creation entitled Carpathes by Minakani walls, the creation of Cécile Figuette and Frédéric Bonnin. The muddy jewel tones and dark foreboding make me want to wallpaper every crevice in this beautiful print. Their creative skills do not stop there, satisfying a need for birds, clouds and lightening bolts. Now all I need is a leather club chair, a roaring fire and a copy of The Raven to make the dream complete.

While working on my Skater photography project, I was excited to meet so many female skaters of all ages sharing the same obsession as the guys in a sport which is still very male dominated when it comes to funding and sponsorship. Amelia Brodka, a Polish born documentary filmmaker, highlights this imbalance in her latest work, Underexposed. If the trailer is anything to go by, this will be a well thought-out and balanced view of the present issues faced by many talented female skaters looking for sponsorship and recognition in their field.

Many illustrators and photographers have dabbled in the fusion of animal heads and human body parts, but Laura McKellar, a Melbourne-based illustrator, does it with a beauty and wit that makes her a standout. Her commitment to illustration seems effortless as she takes on a range of commissioned and personal projects, each revealing her distinctive style. Her hybrid birds and animals bypass the cutesy and appear in their new forms, as if a spell had been cast upon them.

After three years of traveling and shooting skaters at parks, sidewalks and on the streets, the Skater: Portraits by Nikki Toole show is on now at The National Portrait Gallery of Australia, running until May 2. It will then move onto Geelong Gallery for three months in July and tour around Australia after that.

It has been an enlightening process, meeting skaters in cities such as Prague, Rome, London and Berlin, to name a few, who understood the concept of losing yourself in their own headspace while skating. I asked the skaters to hold onto that mind space and to place themselves within that zone while I shot their portrait. Being able to understand and relate to each other through a love of skating made this process easy, even with the obvious language barriers. The project will continue later in the year with another overseas trip until I have enough for a book.
