Thor Engelstad’s photo-media series, Just A Moment, Please, is a statement on Harajuku sub-culture. It portrays the fashion anarchy known as ‘cosplay’ or ‘costume play — total identity transformation through dress-ups. From the baby doll Lolita to dark Goths, these Sunday street sirens are waiting for their moment to be discovered. Englestad’s metallic prints capture this hyper-real style and composites them against Tokyo’s electric backdrop. Read more
Blood is the New Black’s line of t-shirts boast the line’s beautifully architectured promise of the shirts being pieces of art on their own. With an impressive line-up of artists contributing to the design, there is a variety of concepts in play: from loud abstracts to lomo film-esque photographs.
I can’t say I’m a huge fan of the crystal craze. Crystals, like triangles, are ubiquitous these days as visual shorthand for something vaguely mystical. I love these Scilia rings from Five and Two because, rather than evoking the nurturing qualities of Mother Earth, they seem to have tumbled out of an acid nightmare future where everything is synthetic. Baltimore’s Teeth Mountain create pulsing, shamanistic, tribal-sounding tracks from a bunch of floor toms, cello, mandolins, keyboards, saws, and whatever else they can get their hands on. The chaotic music they make is noisy, roughly-hewn, and impulsive-sounding, but that seems to be the point. They’re trying to evoke a sort of post-apocalyptic primitivism. It will be interesting to see where this collective takes their aesthetic.
