Do you feel like you are Big Meech? How about Larry Hoover? Never really got the Alpo references of your favorite rappers? Try reading F.E.D.S: Finally Every Dimension of the Streets. For a while before F.E.D.S, I really grew tired of magazines like The New Yorker, New York Magazine and Time Out New York that only gave me a few dimensions of the streets. The day I first read F.E.D.S, I knew we were meant to be together. Read more

I am not Korean, nor am I a white dude married to a Korean looking to buy a deli for his in-laws. But this book is great and it’s about some stereotypical shit. Coming from a life lived in neighborhoods of color, where delis like these are everywhere, it was interesting hearing their side of the story. I almost wanted to apologize for my self-righteous Spike Lee-fueled justification for all the 40’ I stole growing up. Nah.

Nate Dogg is one of the reasons I rap: ‘It’s a G Funk-era coming down to a gangsta twist’. When I heard he passed, I got really nostalgic. I grew up hard-headed. Being arrested sucks, regardless of the length of your stay. I, like two other rappers, have been in this situation. Cop cars have zero sawg. This song always played in my head every time the cuffs clicked shut. Vintage Snoop on the cameo is classic. The whole vibe is really open and innocent.

Friends. Family. Choice. Tattoos. Beauty marks and freckles. You get the point. In the spirit of art, customization and individuality, getting inked up is a major part of my life. While I am not quite on Wiz or Weezy status with the tats, I definitely have a few pieces that I cherish. One is from Jondix, an amazing artist from Barcelona who makes Stateside cameos only a few times a year. Read more

Jordans, Jordans, Jordans. Do you know how many pairs of Jordans there are? I do, son! Flight Club has the illest selection of current, past and special edition sneakers. So whether you need a pair of 11’s — I always liked the 13’s and 3’s more, personally — or a fitted hat to go with your one-of-a-kind color scheme, go to Flight Club. Smell the sneakers. Fresh. Then tell the manager that Max Burgundy sent you, and if it’s slow, MAYBE he’ll show you something you’ve never seen before. No homogeny. Ya dig.

Many years ago, the Italian designer Fupete and I collaborated on an issue of the magazine I was editing at the time, STU, his intricate art direction giving space and life to the cacophony of illustrations and photography bursting from its pages. The guy is one hell of an art director, and a brilliant designer as well, his latest work revealing his well-developed sense of shape and texture, which meshes seamlessly with his subtle use of color gradients. Here are some awesome cutting boards by Dutch design studio OOOMS that are shaped like puzzle pieces so that they can be connected together to make longer boards for things like baguettes. The best part is that the board can hold a wine glass.

I’m kinda obsessed with this track by Kansas City hipsters, Republic Tigers. Maybe it’s the Phil Spector-ish wall of sound harmonies or perhaps it’s the thumping bass riff, which drives the ear worm melody. Whatever. In these times of throwaway pop, it’s the well crafted and subtely produced songs that are truly memorable, and these guys have it in spades, as reflected right across their brilliant debut album, Keep Color.
