Living in Brooklyn for the past two years, it’s frighteningly easy to forget what nature looks like without experiencing it on a regular basis. So it’s always nice to come across street artist ROA’s large-scale black and white animal work when I’m out walking or riding my bike around town.

ROA got his start painting abandoned buildings and warehouses in his hometown of Ghent, Belgium, and since then his work has been seen in New York, as well as London, Berlin, Warsaw and Paris. Whenever I stumble across his pieces, they act as a
bittersweet reminder of the natural world I’m missing outside NYC and how I need to get outta here more often for my own sanity.

Over the course of the past few months, I started to notice a theme arising in the archives of my own photography work: lone figures standing in the face of adversity, desolate landscapes, beauty, and so on. I recently started compiling some of my favorite images which fit this theme, while continuing to shoot with this in mind. I hope to exhibit this series within the coming year.

Dead Skeletons are a new band from Reykjavik, Iceland who I have been fully hooked on ever since watching their first video for Dead Mantra, a sinister, mind-bending jam that goes on for a good 10 minutes and still seems too brief. Their videos all feature twisted, tripped-out imagery, while their sound blends a hypnotic mix of Hawkwind, Spacemen 3, Wooden Shjips, Circle and Serena Maneesh into an addictive potion of its own.

The perfect record to help make the transition from late Summer to early Fall: laidback, stoney country melodies, ala The Byrds or Crazy Horse, blend with spacey, intricate production, ala Spiritualized, and some thoughtful, Dylan-esque vocals courtesy of frontman Adam Granduciel. I can’t wait to take a road trip up North this Fall when the leaves start changing and blast these jams on the way.
