With a brush of her paints, Kim Manning brings to life the most salacious of humanly experiences. Art has always been second nature to Manning, but it wasn’t until the freedoms of University that she was able to get her hands onto a topic few dare to tread. This Sydney-based artist is having her first solo show at the Tate Gallery at the Toxteth Hotel in Glebe from April 25, and will surprise you with the brilliancy of her palate and subject matter. Ever watched a few back to back episodes of Doctor Who of an evening and thought, hell I want some tea and biscuits. If only the two could combine. Well BAM! Faster than the Tardis itself, this beauty rolled across my computer screen to answer my prayers. No more will I be using a boring conventional teapot. It also makes quite a fair amount of tea, maybe because it’s bigger on the inside than on the outside.

The genius team behind the popular Twitter account @ShitGirlsSay have finally brought out a video, and as expected, it is every bit as accurate and hilarious as their feed suggests. Toronto-based filmmaker Graydon Sheppard and his partner Kyle Humphrey created the humorous account for laughs, and now along with pal Juliette Lewis, the pair has a certified YouTube hit on their hands.

These dashing Canadian boys have suddenly flared up in more peoples’ mind of late thanks to their hilarious mention on How I Met Your Mother. After recording at the Hive in Vancouver, and releasing their stellar new single Water, Yukon Blonde has set their sights on the Australian festival season. They’ll spread their gorgeously rich folksy, bluesy, indie music Down Under before the release of their album in 2012.

The talented artist Flutter Lyon is the creative director of this awesome Sydney-based multi-disciplinary art studio. Working in fashion, graphics, new media and installation mediums, the studio has produced some stellar work. Lyon’s ink work is one particular side of the studio to keep an eye on: with gorgeous imagery and a certain finesse the creations are like Rorschach tests on the eye and imagination.

Tin Sparrow are a Sydney band in the midst of their first single launch in Sydney this month, for the song Hector Myola from their much anticipated album due to be released early 2012. The band sound like a dreamy summer, folksy layered and richly diverse pop blowout. This is no surprise due to some handy work from ex-The Middle East producer Mark Myers.

Ok, the internet may have only been invented so that people can look at pictures of cute kittens doing things without public ridicule. But there is nothing wrong with that, especially when you can combine the gorgeous feline with music. This tumblr is incredible. I have never giggled so much at my computer screen. It also becomes a rather fun game, yelling out what cover they are covering before your buddies. The Velvet Underground banana kitten is by far my favourite, though. Too cute. Read more

Want all the fun of a kite, helium balloon and flying helicopter combined together in a rad toy? Then let me introduce you to Air Swimmers. I haven’t wanted a kid’s toy so badly in a very long time. These fish-shaped balloons are remote controlled contraptions of awesome. The shark is by far the most fun looking. Just imagine the shocked faces. It’s like the fake shark fin attached to your back at the beach for a new flying era.

In honour of Halloween and the fact that over here in Australia we don’t get as much of the spectacular as the folks in the USA, I have been discovering my own awesome stuff about this scary holiday. While looking up Where the Wild Things Are costumes I found this “Spike Jonze: Mourir Auprès de Toi”, and incredible felt stop-motion love story. Although this one may only be suitable for the adult kids, it is a hilariously saucy romp through a library. The collaboration between Spike Jonze and Olympia Le-Tan is an inspired little story you are sure to enjoy.

Jim Carrey is a master jokes man. I have loved him ever since I saw The Mask in the cinemas many years ago. I have also loved The Beatles since before I was born, when my dad would play them over and over. So what would happen if those two things combined: Jim Carrey in his comedic mastery and The Beatles’ brilliant song I Am the Walrus? Your head would explode, right? Pretty much.

I think an ad campaign can often make or break a clothing brand’s new season stock, and more often than not, it isn’t even a reflection on the clothes themselves. Sometimes the clothes can be really awesome, but the photos just don’t impress enough for you to grab your credit card and punch in your details. Then there are ad campaigns so cool you want to buy the clothes even if it’s a men’s range for a season you won’t experience until next year (thanks Southern Hemisphere!). Read more

I’ve been a big fan of Michelle Vandermeer’s work since I came across her Mini Majellen zines at this year’s Sydney Writers Festival. Describing herself as a doer — as in one of those people who are always doing or making something — Michelle’s work, which includes book binding, illustration, jewelery making and her zines, stems from an internal creative springboard and a double degree in architecture and graphic design. Her work is smart and succinct. Read more

Music isn’t necessarily a serious venture. It’s almost funny when you find some you know will grate to dust the stiff upper lipped critics of the world. Every now and then I like the type of sound that hops around the edge of your ears without working its way into your brain and messing up the seratonin levels. And Californian 16-piece tropical-ska-pop group, Still Flyin’, do just that for me. It’s a good laugh, quite catchy, and an awesome live experience so I’m told: especially with the sun out, a can of cider in your hand and a bunch of grinning faces skanking around you.

Wearing this print will not only geek the fashionistas at their own game, but also guarantee inner peace at the bitter end. Or maybe not. But it will strike fear into the hearts of psychiatrists around the world, and you just never know when that might come in dead handy.
