Google recently announced on their blog that they’ve been working with the U.S. Geological Survey, NASA and TIME to release compilations of Earth images taken from space for the interactive Timelapse project.

These compiled images include Lake Urmia drying up, Las Vegas’ urban growth, Dubai’s coastal expansion with its Palm Islands, Alaska’s Columbia Glacier retreat and the Brazilian Amazon deforestation. It’s amazing to see just how much the face of Earth has changed in the span of just three decades because of us people everywhere.

It´s funny how popular TV shows can shed a new light on art. A very good example is the Black Acid Co-op installation from 2009 by the two US-American artists Jonah Freeman and Justin Lowe. It´s their third collaborate project of alchemy in a modern context and community and basically a large scale installation of several rooms including a meth lab, commissioned by Deitch projects.

To enter the installation the visitor has to climb through a big hole in the wall and as soon as he/she is inside a hidden world of abandonment and decay opens up. The exhibition gives the “average” citizen the possibility to experience a sub-culture he is probably surrounded by every day without noticing and without even imagining that his neighbour might have a drug lab next door…

London design duo Raw Edges was commissioned by the British Council to display fiction titles by Brit novelists handpicked by lit magazine Granta, and they came up with an elegant bare-bones wooden bookcase to display the works.
If you’re headed to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport in June, watch out for a herd of, er, goats. Slated to provide “sustainable vegetation management grazing services” in a two-year $100,000 contract awarded to a Chicago-based company, they’ll be grazing on weeds and invasive plants on the 120 acres or so weedy grounds there.

The arragement will supposedly save the airport hefty landscape maintenance costs for fuel, labour, herbicides and miscellaneous equipment. Here’s hoping the hooved ones will at least get ear plugs or some sort of sound protection for their sonic welfare.

Wow, this is too cool for words. At the New College Nottingham in England, you can headbang your way to a degree in heavy metal. To be specific, if you enroll in the Heavy Metal Music Performance degree — it’s a full time course, mind you, heavy metal demands nothing less than guts, blood, sweat and round-the-clock commitment — you will learn how to market yourself, work on your on-stage performance, get a good footing on the history of heavy metal, and more.

The three-year foundation degree course commences in September 2013 and will be awarded by Nottingham Trent University, with a one-year BA top-up thereafter for those who want to be thoroughly qualified for a career in heavy metal with the full degree.

Italian photographer Rä di Martino took these amazing pictures of abandoned Star Wars film sets in Tunisia. Using Google Earth, she effectively tracked down decades-old locations such as Luke Skywalker’s Tatooine dome home, the Lars Homestead, for a number of photographic projects. As she observed on her website, “Some of it have now become ruins, almost as some sort strange archeological sites. The particular hot and dry climate has helped maintain intact many parts of the sets, or buried under the sand just sections of it.”

In honor of its Opportunity rover which has been doing some intensive Mars sightseeing for close to a decade, NASA came up with a infographic chart that showed the distances that have been embarked on by its other vehicles on terrains out there in space. The Opportunity has roved 35.760 kilometers around the rim of Mars’ Endeavour crater, well ahead of the Apollo 17 moon buggy’s 35.744 kilometers. Never mind that the Curiosity rover has managed just less than a kilometer so far since it landed in August; it has at least 14 years in its nuclear batteries to catch up.

Visual artist and educator Kerry Skarbakka, in his photo series The Struggle To Right Oneself, photographs himself — with the help of climbing gear and various equipment — dangling perilously or tumbling down in frightful situations. His work is in response to the human experience of uncertainty and balance; of relinquishing and taking control. As he says in his artist statement, the images “convey the primal qualities of the human condition as a precarious balancing act between the struggle against our desire to survive and our fantasy to transcend our humanness.”

In 1920, T.S. Eliot mused in The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, “I have measured out my life with coffee spoons”. Now, in this day and age, German tea brand Hälssen & Lyon’s tea calendar lets you tear off dates made from 1mm-thin slabs of compressed tea — and brew ‘em. This means you can make a fine tea out of any day. If yesterday was a bad day, you’ve certainly earned it.

Guy, this is probably the closest thing you’ll find to a Batman utility belt. The Speakeasy Briefs — an invention dreamt up by best buds Jeff Schneider and Dan Goldman— are underpants that come with a private pocket for carrying whatever you can tuck inside. That includes a flask. That’s right — if you pledge $29 towards their Kickstarter fund, you’ll get to snare a pair of Speakeasy Briefs and a flask and (to quote these guys) “bring the party to your pecker”.
