Elly Mackay is one of my favorite artists. She lives and works in Owen Sound in Ontario, Canada. She creates breathtakingly beautiful, fanciful, storybook-like Yupo paper works on a small scale. Then, in a small stage setting, or ‘theater’, she photographs the drawings to create the finished product. The end result is akin to a picture out of the most beautiful, timeless storybook imaginable. She is currently working on children’s books.
My digital work allows me to explore vibrant use of color in a medium that I am able to control in great detail. I enjoy examining the natural world, and manipulating landscapes in ways that bring out an ‘otherworldly’ element in the image.
Dara Scully is a Spanish artist and photographer who has a remarkable body of work. Particularly intriguing is her series of photographs entitled Wild and Hurt, which is fantasy driven, but with unsettling elements that seem to tell stories of childhood juxtaposed with adult themes.
I first came across these very unique seeds in the shape of heads on Kelsey’s Etsy shop. The seed faces are created using recycled paper pulp that is shaped with a doll face mold and filled with organic heirloom seeds. The faces vary in skin tone, age and gender. Very quirky and cool way to grow your own organic clover, dill, radish, arugula, red or green cabbage, broccoli, or kale. Almost too cool to plant.
Gary Burns is a self-taught wood carver who creates amazingly intricate and beautiful works in wood. From his Tree Wizard Gallery in the northwest United States, Woods carves ‘wood spirits’, each unique, with a magical personality all its own. Several years ago, I came across one of his listings on eBay, and purchased it. I was awed by how beautiful his work is. He bonds with the medium in such a way that the original essence of it is preserved, and it’s raw, natural beauty maintained. The end result is truly magic.
Wow! Laura Bifano is an amazing artist who lives and works in Victoria, British Columbia. She has created a series of illustrations based on animals in their natural environments, with a digital feel. Her beautiful work couples the natural world with the digital age. The unique ‘pixilated’ look of her images is both unusual and intriguing – a modern take on nature. Gorgeous settings and interesting, lovely, yet distorted surreal wildlife.
Sundries and Plunder is a two sister team from Oregon who create and sell beautiful, unique leather masks. With Halloween coming up quickly, why not check out these gorgeous, handcrafted masks for both children and adults? The choices are many and varied, but all are beautiful. Special requests welcomed.
