If you are chosen for the path of an ‘expressionist’ and/or ‘abstract expressionist’ painter: first of all, you accept that painting the intangible, aka ‘nothing’, is a lot of the times harder than painting the ‘something’. Know the challenge. Secondly, painting from only a real and honest place within yourself can be extremely exhausting and at the same time intoxicating; or, sometimes you’ll just need to get intoxicated. Give yourself a break!

Next, you accept the fact that most people will simplify your work as a.) floral , b.) phallic or c.) both floral and phallic. You know that you will consistently be questioned on your technical ability. The only way to combat this is by being technically savvy- so to say, become an expert in drawing and make these available to the public. This will help your paintings anyway.

If you find yourself trying to discover your INTENT and can’t find it, give yourself an excuse to keep painting and tell yourself something along the lines of: I paint with a lack of intention and therefore I can truly paint altruistically and honestly in the moment, my tool is my own realm of experiences. Accept the physical.

Lastly, you know that you will get sick of painting ‘nothing’ and eventually you’ll want to do something else.

It’s the kind of website where seriously every single photo is something that I would put into my image/inspiration folder. I suppose it’s sort of weird to look at pictures of woman with fashion sense everyday, which is why it’s nice when a blog incorporates more stimulating imagery aside from clothing or nail color. Tash and Elle are in Sydney and have quite the eye as far as I am concerned. They also post tons of images almost every day, so there’s never a shortage of things to look at.

Fashion designers Kalen Kaminiski and Astrid Chastka are making some gorgeous, shibuori-inspired womenswear and accessories. Astrid and Kalen custom dye each of their pieces, embracing the ‘mistake’ as a ‘happy accident’. That’s a very in-the-moment way to create, and I bow down to them.

My friend Kalen, self-described as the ‘horse girl’ in her adolescence, says they are most excited about their transition into apparel from accessories applying their arashi or itajime shibori techniques. For those of you unaware, the arashi technique involves strategic folding, whereas itajime relies on ‘resists’. Everything is hand dyed and one of a kind.

William O’Brien Jr. is Assistant Professor of Architecture at the MIT School of Architecture and Planning, and is principal of an independent design practice in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His practice was recently awarded the 2011 Architectural League Prize for Young Architects and Designers. Twins is a design proposal for two vacation homes for two brothers and their families on one plot of land in upstate New York and represents an examination of a curious part to whole relationship.

The mathematical principle of ‘dissection’ states that any two regular polygons with equal areas can be divided into set of similar shapes; ‘minimal dissection’ is the pursuit of the fewest number of subdivisions in each polygon. Another great project by William O’Brien Jr. is the Allansdale House. I don’t know what exactly attracts me so much about his innovative projects; they are so clean and spacious, ingeniously fitting in their natural surroundings. I wouldn’t mind having him build my future properties.

I have a major crush on Daniel Arsham. I like everything he does and has done, which also makes him very annoying to me. When you find an artist that somehow manages to accomplish this, there is no place to feel anything but respect. And exhaustion.

His first solo show in LA opens on January 20th at OHWOW, titled: The Fall, The Ball, and The Wall. The ‘wall’ alludes to Arsham’s befuddling sculptures that appear to ooze from the surface of the wall. And the ‘fall’ relates to structures that seemingly defy the laws of nature. ‘I’m trying to create a space where the architecture appears to be in movement’, he explains, ‘as if it is in the process of forming or deforming itself’. I love in his new work how he infringes the ordinary uses of architecture.
