When she’s not writing ads in Sydney, Laura can be found indulging her love for all things Summer-related on her blog, This Island Life. If she could, she’d spend her time following the Summer to every exotic corner on earth. Until then, she’ll continue working on her ever-expanding bikini collection while living on the biggest Island in the world.

By This Island Life in New Art on Tuesday 24 July 2012

The Biennale of Sydney is once again in full swing at some of the best art spaces around town, showcasing the work of Australia’s most thought-provoking artists, such as John Wolseley and Tim Johnson. A stand out for me is the work of Alick Tipoti, whose exhibition, Girelal, is currently showing at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA).

Makers of Belief: vintage fashion made easy

This Island Life Contributor

By This Island Life in New Fashion on Thursday 21 June 2012

Vintage fashion is great, but not everyone has the time to go digging through racks or perusing the markets. Lucky for us, international vintage purveyor Kristy Barros does. Through her vintage collective Makers of Belief, Barros hunts out the best pieces from around the world, so we don’t have to

Brazil’s hidden pirate beaches

This Island Life Contributor

By This Island Life in Cool Travel on Thursday 21 June 2012

On my last day in Búzios, an Argentinean backpacker told me that I was an hour drive away from some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. I thought I’d already found paradise in the seaside town of Búzios, so this kind of claim could only mean one thing. These beaches were going to be off the hook ridiculous.

Boardshorts by Californian label Del Playa Drive

This Island Life Contributor

By This Island Life in New Fashion on Thursday 21 June 2012

Californian label Del Playa Drive has branched out into menswear with a seriously cool collection of board shorts. What we like about these guys is that they don’t take fashion or themselves too seriously. They’re in the business of making clothes we actually want to wear that aren’t going to leave us feeling like we’ve been robbed.

The ultimate island home on St. Barthélem

This Island Life Contributor

By This Island Life in Architecture on Thursday 21 June 2012

Forget panoramic water views, this beach house is all about panoramic palm tree views. Located on the tiny island of St. Barthélemy, in the French West Indies, the six-bedroom home is the work of architects Kathy Adam and Lesley Batchelor and interior designer (former fashion editor for British Elle) Alisa Thirty. Their goal was to create simple luxury with an edge.

Australian surf photography by Frothers

This Island Life Contributor

By This Island Life in New Photography on Thursday 21 June 2012

Frothers is a Sydney-based website run by a bunch of photographers who each share a common love of the ocean, sun and sand. Every morning they photograph our beautiful beaches, and in turn, document a way of life. Images of local surfers charging and soft-sand runners running are captured in that golden hour before most of us are even awake. Their daily email depicting early morning beach life has become an escape ritual for not just Sydneysiders stuck at work, but for beach lovers from all over the world. Pop into the Frothers Gallery next time you’re in Bronte and see their passion for photography up close.

Daimon Downey designs art scarves for Bay & Fyfe

This Island Life Contributor

By This Island Life in New Fashion on Wednesday 4 April 2012

If you’ve been wondering what Daimon Downey’s getting up to since he left Sneaky Sound System, he’s been making art. He teamed up with concept label Bay & Fyfe after the label’s owner Frith Hucks purchased a piece from Downey’s solo exhibition in New York late last year. Together they’ve created wearable art in the form of luxurious limited edition scarves. Drawing on a series of six paintings titled Pastel Zoo, Downey’s works transfer paint into print and play off the notion of life versus death and good versus evil. Each scarf comes in a run of 400, so grab one before they disappear.

When you live in North Bondi, slash Rose Bay, you don’t just cross through the Jersey Shore summer crowd of Middle Bondi for any old bar. But you do when it’s The Anchor, a cool little port in South Bondi and our new hang. Owned by Steve Wasley (of Bondi Massive café three doors up), Jon Laurenson, Sam Cockle and Georgia Bennett, The Anchor Bar and Restaurant isn’t just another tapas joint with a bunch of cool dudes behind the bar and in the kitchen.

Women’s wetsuits by Byron Bay label Tallow

This Island Life Contributor

By This Island Life in New Fashion on Tuesday 3 April 2012

Learning to surf is hard. There’s reading the waves, respecting the line-up, and not freaking out when a big set rolls in. But the biggest challenge of all is finding gear that’s not just functional but fashionable. Call me superficial, but I don’t want to hit the beach wearing some generic ensemble that clashes with my board. So you can imagine my delight when I came across a super cool range of women’s wetsuits by Byron Bay-based label, Tallow.

There’s people watching and then there’s Mrs Sippy. Located just off the main drag in Double Bay, Mrs Sippy is a new bar brought to us by the guys who run The London in Paddington. Keen to find a new local hang that didn’t attract the weekend Sheaf crowd, we headed down on a Saturday night and discovered an even stranger mix of people.

OeTZI3300 Shearling Booties

This Island Life Contributor

By This Island Life in New Fashion on Tuesday 15 November 2011

Sheepskin boots have been synonymous with surf culture since the seventies, but unfortunately they haven’t had the same associations with style. So when we stumbled across the new shearling booties by California-based footwear label OeTZI3300, we were confused. They may look like the perfect shoe to slip on after a dip in the cold ocean, but there’s nothing slipper-like about them. Made out of the finest sheepskin shearling, these women’s booties have mega long leather laces so you can wear them laced up high or folded down over the ankles.

MYO Swimwear: luxury brand of men’s resort wear

This Island Life Contributor

By This Island Life in New Fashion on Tuesday 15 November 2011

We’re not usually into labels that tell us that they’re designed to be worn ‘at the most exclusive beaches and hotspots of the summer’ but Myo are based in Como, Italy, so we’ll excuse them. Started earlier this year by brothers David and William Fattal, Myo is a new luxury brand of men’s resort wear that wouldn’t look out of place on Jude Law’s character in The Talented Mr Ripley.
