Gili Trawangan in Indonesia has long been a party island destination for backpackers and young travellers alike. There are no police on the island, so Gili T governs itself. Mushroom milkshakes are proudly advertised and you’ll be offered weed, often before you get to your hotel. It’s just that kind of place. Read more

Ironically, I bought this Hengki Koentjoro piece before I went to Indonesia, but I’ll tell you, the $90 FedEx bill was well worth it. Based in Jakarta, the work of this Indonesian photographer says it all, so I’ll let his pictures do the talking. Read more

The last thing we expected to stumble across on Gili Trawangan was a boutique vintage clothing store. But tucked away from the main drag are some of the best vintage threads we’ve seen in a while. Vintage Delivery Store is the creation of Swedish couple Natalie and Johnny and their adorable 2 ½ year old son Noah, who sold their two vintage stores back home to relocate to the island of Gili Trawangan in Lombok, Indonesia, in search of an alternative lifestyle. My friend had been talking about the full moon party on Gili Trawangan for the last five months, but within 30 minutes of arriving at Villa Devatas that plan had gone to hell. We had only planned to stay one night before heading off to the Gilis at the crack of dawn, except that after a tour of our villa and the property, it was clear that the half a day we had there wasn’t going to be long enough. I’ve got a problem with We Are Handsome. You see, when most designers release a new collection, it’s usually just a few pieces that will catch your attention. But not We Are Handsome. No, no. When they release a collection, every piece is as beautiful as the last, making it impossible to identify with just one or two swimsuits. And their latest work, titled The Aviary, is no different. With beachfront houses, bath tubs overflowing with beer, old-school cruiser bikes, late night skinny dips, spring breaks in Mexico and hot Californian surfer boys, Del Playa Drive sounds like more of a lifestyle than a street. Meaning ‘the ocean’ in Spanish, Del Playa Drive is a one-mile strip in Santa Barbara and the inspiration behind hot new label, Del Playa Drive. Read more

After living out of a backpack for five weeks in hostel-style accommodation, I was in desperate need of some luxurious digs. Don’t get me wrong, its not like my own apartment isn’t nice. There’s just nothing like checking into a hotel suite with water views, fluffy robes, crisp white linen and a rooftop pool. Read more

When I went to pick up my tourist visa from the Brazilian Consulate, I was preparing for a confrontation of the bureaucratic kind, not of the arrestingly beautiful variety. But there, in front of me, was a collection of images titled ‘Strength and Beauty’ by Australian photographer David Prichard — images from the very country I was preparing to visit. And although I was yet to set foot in Brazil, I felt an immediate connection to the subjects and their surroundings. Read more

Well, well, well, what do we have here? It looks like the buyers from Country Road may have paid a little visit to the Madeline Weinrib store in New York, because their Ikat clutch looks suspiciously familiar. And after a good hard peruse at the American designer’s Ikat clutch collection, I don’t blame them. One glance at these babies and you won’t want to settle. And why should you? Read more

Whether it’s a cocktail with a mini umbrella on the plane, or an exotic duty free fragrance at the airport, everyone needs a little something to tip them into summer holiday mode. My ritual is a little different. It involves loading boring travel paraphernalia into one the most fabulous travel companions I’ve ever seen. Read more

My mum was born on the 11th of November at around 11am, so I’ve grown up with the 11:11 phenomenon. Basically, she’s one of those people who always happens to check the time when it’s 11:11 o’clock. Some people explain it as a coincidence; others believe it to be an auspicious sign or the signal of a spiritual presence. As a child, I never really questioned these continual occurrences; I though that 11:11 was just her thing. Well it turns out it’s also thousands of other peoples thing, and one of them owns an amazing boutique in Byron Bay called 11:11 O’Clock. Read more

When board shaper Nick Mcarthur paddled his 10-foot experiment out for its maiden voyage, he didn’t know what to expect. Ten hours earlier he’d driven up to Byron Bay on a whim with the heavy board in the back and an impulsive energy he just couldn’t shake. So there he was waiting — just him, the board and a pair of short shorts. And when that perfect wave came, his board rode like a dream and only fuelled his board-shaping obsession. Read more

My boyfriend is your typical guy who likes wearing nice clothes, but has no patience for shopping. So when a recent shopping trip in Byron Bay went into its second hour, I knew I was heading into dangerous territory. I knew I only had about two more minutes before he’d reach his man-shopping threshold, so you can imagine my surprise when from across the store he called out: ‘babe, do you like these shorts?’ And sure enough there he was, elbow deep in a stack of brightly printed boardies by Aussie label, Toggs. December 7, 2010 | New & Cool Architecture | by This Island Life |

While researching my end of year trip to South America, I stumbled across a cute little historical town in Brazil called Paratay. Apparently it’s known for its 19th century colonial architecture, but I can’t tell you a thing about that. I’m too busy imagining what my life would be like if I called this palatial beach house my casa. Maybe I’d be a Brazilian swimwear designer and use the beachfront pool to host collection launches. Or perhaps I’d dabble in some sort of illicit trade, making the boat-only access more of a necessity than a luxury. Read more
