What a great concept: music and musicians traveling through the great American landscape on a train. Kind of like the circus rolling in to town. And Mumford and Sons is one of my absolute favorite bands these days. I saw them for the first time on a whim with about 60 other people at the Mercury Lounge in New York during the CMJ Music Festival two years ago. Absolute brilliance.

We were on tour one Winter and it seemed like everywhere we went, we were either playing the day before or the day after Machester Orchestra at the same venues. Vans and trailers passing in the night. Best part about them, too: they are neither from Manchester nor are an orchestra. They are actually a five-piece band from outside Atlanta, Georgia.

I’ve been a fan of The Damwells for about as long as they’ve been a band. This is a ridiculously simple yet captivating video for the song The Great Unknown, the first tune they released off of their most recent record, No One Listens To The Band Anymore. Man, Alex Dezen sure knows how to write a good song.

Terrence Malick, what is this movie about? I’ve watched the trailer nearly 20 times and I still cannot figure it out. Regardless, I’m sure it’s going to be amazing. When we were in the midst of recording our last record, parts of this film were being shot just outside of Austin. Our producer’s house, wife and kids were used in scenes shot for the movie.

A month ago, I began noticing these random upright pianos popping up in the most odd places all across Austin: on pedestrian bridges, running trails, in front of downtown building. It’s a beautiful idea for an art installation, using a city known for its music, culture and artistic identity, and painting it with its own brush. Kudos Luke Jerram.

This video was shot and edited around the same time as our video for Sing [watch below]. Both were done by our good friend (and general boy genius), director Jeff Ray. This guy is stupid good behind the camera. Read more
Flow is an eco friendly ring, made by assembling pieces of recycled straws, for those looking for a unique accessory. The ring band is given by using the elbow of a straw, which gives it a flexibility to be adapted to any extent. And combining patterns and colors, varying the number of pieces of drinking straws, you get an infinite variety of rings for any occasion, age, style, look — making the world cleaner and more colorful in the process. Fans of Australian buzzsaw rock trio, The Vines, might like to check out our sister site, My Secret Playlist, where drummer Hamish Rosser has written about eight songs he’s digging right now. There’s some interesting choices in there including The Strokes, James Brown, and, gulp, Joan Jett.
NASA has released some pretty amazing audio recordings of sounds from the moons of Saturn. The weirdest thing about them is that they actually sound like Theremin warbles and echoey whooshy sounds from ‘50s movies about space.
Quiksilver, the surfing apparel company, has just released what is being considered the world’s first eco-friendly watch. Made of sustainable ebony wood and running on automatic movement instead of batteries, this limited-edition watch is green down to the shipping of the raw materials. Every raw material used in making this watch is recyclable (the aluminum, the steel, and the mineral crystal are all 100% recyclable), and it also includes solvent free links and is shipped by sea rather than by air. The Ray has a five-year warranty, meaning that it has a longer life than normal watches.
