Have you heard of Haim? They’re three cool and talented LA-based sisters whose newest EP Forever has been playing on my iPod nonstop. The first time I heard their music, all I wanted to do was wear hip vintage clothes, learn the bass, and dance nonstop. Just when I thought it wasn’t possible to like them even more, I discovered this music video. Scenes of the three of them singing and having the time of their lives from childhood to present made me nostalgic for my own sisters. Flashbacks to summer’s spent in the pool, riding bikes, and dancing in hair salons. I can totally relate to these girls, and I’m pretty sure others can as well. Family bands rule.

It took a few viewings for me to fully come to terms with my feelings for When The Night Falls, but ultimately my love for P-Thugg in yellow was the final push that persuaded me. Leave it to Canadian duo Chromeo to take every guy’s nightmare (pregnant Zombie-like ladies chasing after them) and make it so darn catchy.

STA Travel Australia sent three of their mates, Rick Mereki, Andrew Lees and Tim White, on a six week journey around the world. What resulted was three one minute videos of some pretty impressive stop motion footage of the food, culture, and people that they encountered.

I came across the British record label Finders Keepers within a little music shop in Austin, Texas, of all places. Browsing through the CD shelves looking for a good mix to help fuel my road-trip back to California, I spotted a spooked-out psychedelic jazz score to a 70s Czech horror film. It was so random and so strange that I knew that I had to have it.

With a little more digging, I found more and more amazing soundtracks to tons of obscure foreign films. Once I bought all of the Finders Keepers CDs in that shop, I knew I had to get to a computer and look this record company up. What I found was a website full of even more CDs for sale online. Pure music gold! If you love avant-garde and whacked-out movie music, this is your new best friend.

Every now and then advertising agencies come up with some pretty ingenious ideas, and 13th Street Bowlingheads is no exception. Done by Stockholm advertising agency Jung Von Matt and artist Oliver Paass as a way to promote the German horror TV channel No.1, it took over three weeks to make these hand-painted detailed bowling balls.

Besides the fact that the detail on these balls is amazing, the best part is that they managed to swap the standard balls for these special ones in bowling alleys all over Germany. Now, that’s one way to increase TV ratings.

Do you have a favorite Newbery Medal book? From Charlotte’s Web to The Giver, there are tons of classics that we have all grown to love. James Kennedy, the author of the young adult book, The Order of Odd-Fish, has teamed up with the New York Library and the Chicago Public Library, to create the 90-Second Newbery Video Contest.

All you need is a video camera, a Newbery Medal book, and 90 seconds. Once all the videos are collected (they are due by October 17), the winners’ videos will be shown at the 90-Second Newbery Film Festival held at the New York Public Library on November 5, as well as the Chicago Public Library on November 16.

Being the independent film junkie an avid Hulu and Netflix viewer that I am, you can imagine my excitement when I came across No Budge, a website dedicated to no budget films. The site was created by filmmaker, Kentucker Audley, whose no budget film Open Film received critical acclaim from all over.

What makes the site even better is that a majority of the films are available for free streaming. You can now finally enjoy true indie films from the comfort of wherever an Internet connection exists.

It was only a matter of time before Quirk Books released their next literary creation on the world, and this September they plan on letting loose Bedbugs. Yes, the title of the book is Bedbugs.

I feel like the Smithsonian and Museum of the Moving Image have read my mind: an entire exhibit dedicated to the crazy and wonderful world of Jim Henson!? It’s almost too perfect to even comprehend. The retrospective is titled Jim Henson’s Fantastic World and it contains more than 120 artifacts: including drawings, storyboards, and props. The exhibit is open from now until next January.

OC-based hip hop-electronica band BLOK is more like performance art for your ears. They’re not your typical young musical group coming out of SoCal, but honestly I’ve had enough indie folk to last me a lifetime. Made up of Damien Blaise, Jesse Saint John, and Gianna Gianna, these three siblings have a new music video, Jungle Dog Fang Hell.

This crazily creative video is one that will stay with you for sometime, and having seen these three performers live, I can tell you that this music video is exactly what it’s like to attend one of their concerts. San Francisco artist Lisa Congdon was looking to try something different from her regular illustration work. So she looked around her studio and realized that she had enough items to photograph and document every single day.

From that came A Collection A Day, which is a book and website showing 365 of Congdon’s collections. Covering everything from old family photos, school globes, to scout patches.

What does one year of make-up really look like? Dutch video artists Lernert and Sander decided to find out with their latest video, Natural Beauty, where they continuously applied 365 layers of makeup onto one model.

What resulted is a nine hour application process that required seven bottles of foundation, two bottles of cream blush, two bottles of eyeshadow, and three tubes of lipsticks. I am both mortified and mesmerized by the finished look.

This blog, Angel Does Stuff, features a cardboard cutout of Buffy The Vampier Slayer’s Angel doing fun things like grabbing something to drink out of the fridge, or standing next to a Betty White calendar. These photos shouldn’t interest me at all, but I just can’t look away.

We live in a world where everything is online, where internet access is now a basic necessity, and where anyone and everyone’s voices can easily be heard. But what would happen if the democratic Internet, as we know it, was, instead, controlled by a handful of people? What if these same people had the power to shut the Internet down at their whim and discretion? That possibility is what the film #killswitch wants to discuss.

Through multiple interviews with bloggers, professors, and politicans from all over, #killswitch aims to start a dialogue about what would happen if our free open media became anything but free and open. Created by Akorn Entertainment, Ali Akbarzadeh, Jeffrey Horn, and Chris Dollar are doing everything they can to get this film and its message seen.

But unfortunately, they lack the funds to make their dream a reality. They have started a Kickstarter page asking people to donate, with donations starting as low as just $1. If you have the means please donate, it would be a shame if their message of preserving free open media for all was stopped because of insufficient funds.

After seeing these lovely ladies’ AMAZING portraits on the fabulous blog, Advanced Style, taken by (the new love of my life) Ari Seth Cohen, who wouldn’t want to skip their 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s? If it meant that I could go right into my elderly chic days, I’d gladly give up my twenties because, try as I might, rocking those pants and glasses just wouldn’t fly very well right now. Born in Japan, but currently living in Brooklyn, artist Hisham Akira Bharoocha’s portfolio is full of amazing photographs, paintings, installations, and even music tracks. But my favorite out of all of his creations, are his collages.

They’re the perfect blend of mixed media, color, and imagery. Looking at them makes me feel like I’ve fallen into a Hipster’s Paradise; a place where neon colors and references to nature and politics coexist peacefully. Wide eyed kittens and pom poms are also present.

The Venice Biennale is right around the corner. It’s one of (if not) the biggest art events in the world, and this year America’s favorite celebrity, Lindsay Lohan, will be making an appearance. As art. Yes, that’s right, as art.

The video shown above was done by famed director Richard Phillips and was created for the Garage Center for Contemporary Art’s group show titled Commercial Break. The GCCA is bringing this video, along with several other pieces from their exhibit, to the Biennale. Though sadly, Lindsay’s ankle Monitor will not be shown in the Biennale.
