Remember how, as a kid, teachers created an atmosphere of FUN as the best way to learn? It was an inspired place for imagination and support. Hmmm, well it seems adults get the short end of the stick, playing only a game of ’serious’ and ‘responsibility’. So when I came across this video, it was interesting to see life’s playground had merged into the adult world. Yipeeee! Adults need to have some fun, too.

I guess having Darth Vader as your boss would compel you to spend your days off reflecting, making friends with Gizmo, having a jam session, and, of course, continuing your battle against the Jedi Council by sending hate mail to Mr. Skywalker himself. In another universe, I can’t help but wonder if the inspiration behind Jackass and Johny Knoxville’s deviant ways were inspired by these Stormtroopers’ antics. Browsing through Krislyn Meyer-Komarov’s website, I couldn’t help but imagine different events to commission her work for. Inspired to see flowers and trees in such a beautiful form seems a good enough reason for an event, right!? Or perhaps I can just order them to decorate my house with. 2010, the year of the eccentric!

Sometimes I think I was born in the wrong era. When I read about historical icons I tend to glamorize them. Their lives seemed so vividly validated, pioneers creating new ground, having the courage to speak an alternative language full of questions and tinged adversity. Mark Twain’s quote, ‘I have never let my schooling interfere with my education’, somehow puts me back in my place, reminding me to write my own way. Artists Miso and Ghostpatrol organically sketch their way to inspiring street art that holds dear to frontierland. Together their momentum clears uncommon ground.

Los Angeles sister communicates with New York sister — texts, e-mails, conference calls, BBMs, IMs, Skype — using divine imagery to inspire a thought, memory or whatever resonates with the moment in time. Surging their way into our purpose-filled lives, this site offers a refreshing delight. A conversation without words could be considered a lost art, and when you combine that with two sisters lending their daily thoughts to each other, a smile resides. Not to mention that the images are fantastic.

Finding inspiration from his childhood doodles, artist Loren Kreiss brings his new solo show Say Hello to My Little Friends to New York’s Fuller Building on May 28. I not only want to say Hello, I want to meet these evolved beasts. I treasure the moment when I see the direct relationship between artist and art work and recognize the defining moment when the artist let’s the pieces go to create a life of their own. The sense of humor behind Kriess’ work is such clever wit: each name is an ode to pop culture and playful minion-making. Selfishly, I am partial to The Allegra Twins, as this is my middle name, and smirk in the knowledge that these jovial gals are up to no good.

In 2007, a group of New York boys brought bike polo over to London’s Brick Lane and it’s been taking a life of its own ever since. Historically, this hardcourt sport began in 1891 and even got a start at the 1908 Olympics. As it re-emerges onto the scene, Chunk, a London-based street wear label drives the sport forward with their line of wear, as well as sponsoring the 2009 European Bike Polo Championship, and the London based team, BRBPC. Heavily influenced by music and film, the design team at Conquer Gear showcases their tees not as clothes, but indubitably as limited edition art pieces. That said, I wonder what film or music piece inspired Mr. Owl picture t shirt [below]? Led Zeppelin came to mind, but then so did Joni Mitchell!. I always knew it was going to be a good day when I woke up to the aroma of maple syrup and the tunes of Fleetwood Mac. Happy times in the kitchen with Dad were to follow. Bringing his mastery to the pancake world, he would whip up shapes of Micky Mouse, hearts, and even spell out my name. No matter where I am, when a get a whiff of that candied smell of enchantment, I smile in memory of Papa’s Pancakes and a time of pure innocence. Alas, a new smell arrived under my nose the other day. It was one that exuded the mystery of a place far from earth, mixed with milky blends to bring you a genuine sense of comfort. Read more

Beautiful, delicate, fragile, a little bit collage, a little bit sketchfull. This is the work of Kelly Smith. Combining several mediums in a collaborative expose between pencil, paint and print to create timeless works of elegant splendour, it is easy to compare Smith’s works to the last snowflake of winter, fleeting but real, avoiding the brash bright mercantile world for the prettier climes of illustrative pleasure. Smith has a twelve-day exhibition on at the 696 Space in Brunswick, Melbourne, opening November 14.
Drawing upon both the traditional and the classically abstract ideals of tie design, the Sovereign Beck line of neckwear was created in limited quantity: bias cut and hand stitched in New York City. There are just 75 pieces per design.

The philosophy of a beginning is to me, a wonderful concept. I really enjoy flicking through the back catalogues of a musician and discovering their origin, then tracing their musical journey to the present. So for American-born, Paris-based sister duo CocoRosie, who released their third album The Adventure of Ghosthouse and Stillborn to much acclaim, making the trip to their beginnings is more than worth the journey: their debut album, Le Maison de Mon Reve (released back in 2004) was a gentle stroll through their pop and classical influences, which melt together seamlessly into a backdrop for their unique and enchanting voices.
On the roof of Bangkok’s Banyan Tree Hotel is a dining experience like no other. The Vertigo Bar sits sixty one floors up, and serves delicious gourmet meals and cocktails. These are expensive by Thai standards, but cheap enough for shoestring travellers to indulge in now and then (a cocktail costs around AUD$12). I’ve spent hour after hour in the bar, drinking and smoking and taking in the amazing view. Most nights at Vertigo end the same, with fast-moving storm clouds rolling in without fail at about eleven pm. While wait staff scurry to move tables, and drunken diners navigate the steep stairs down to the safety of the hotel, the more hardy can sit and watch the clouds race closer and closer towards the building, soaking in both the atmosphere and the rainwater until the lightning gets too close for comfort.
The slow building melody and delicate folktronica production of London-based James Yuill’s This Sweet Love is the perfect soundtrack to a lazy Sunday morning.
