The Idea behind my recent show, Exhibit B, was simple: I really wanted to pay homage to Guy Bourdin while putting my own spin on what he’s done and how he’s influenced and inspired me. I think we share a similar sense of humor.

It’s a dry British humour that deconstructs what are really seen as regular elements of composition in photography: the chopping of body parts out of the frame, the unfinished narratives and ‘fashion’ images that in my mind are bigger than fashion images and secretly have nothing to do with fashion at all. There are no apologies offered in the work and I respect that.

The concept of this body of work was born in my head before I thought of making it a Guy Bourdin tribute. I wanted to do a leg story, really, just for fun. Legs speak to me and can be really expressive. There are a few girls I know that have amazing legs who I really wanted to photograph.

My friend Nadja has a beautiful space in Williamsburg called Rouge 58 and we wanted to do a show together at her space for a while. It just so happens that she wanted to schedule my show to open just as New York Fashion Week started. This is the moment when the concept went from fun weekend with friends and a camera, to a real life photography exhibition that had the potential to be something tangible and big.

The show itself was amazing and far exceeded any expectations I had. I was flattered to have some of my heroes in the art world come through and grace the space with their presence. Artists such as Eric Haze and Dust La Rock came through, as did the likes of photographer Phil Knott, amongst others.

Wyatt Gallery is a person, not a place. I met Wyatt almost eight years ago through an ex-girlfriend. Since then, we have traveled all over the planet, photographing things (mostly natural disasters) together. Our first trip was to Sri Lanka in 2004 in the weeks following the Tsunami. Our most recent trip was just a few weeks ago when we went to Haiti.

Wyatt also did a great series of photographs in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Wyatt is a master at shooting landscape and architectural photography (two practices that few of our generation dabble in). Wyatt has also won just about every award that a professional photographer can win, including the PDN 30 award and a Fulbright grant.

I met Rodney White a few years ago and I’ve always been amazed by his skill and clarity of vision. He is sort of an old soul. You get that when you speak to him. I sense, also, that when I look at his work, it’s from a different time. White makes work that he purposely distresses to look worn and weathered. When he was six, he found a box of scrap paper in the back of a kindergarten classroom. And the rest is history. Today, White is an artist whose work is painted mostly on wood panels, hybrid compositions of the things he loves: typography, numerology, his own poetry, and vintage advertising.

He celebrates his birthday every year on March 4th, which is the only calendar date that is also a command. Duffney can design a logo or create something good that you will want to hang in your bedroom or place in your pocket forever. He also has an incredible flannel shirt collection. He can only do three things, but he can do those three things very well. He likes to see his name.

I’ve known Jules Kim for about six years now, and in that time, she’s never not been an inspiring individual. Bijules is a widely known and respected jewelry and accessory line within tastemaker culture.

Celebrated in national and international press, Bijules is a unique brand sought after by those who have a passion for individuality and fashion. Current advocates of the line include some of the deepest underground acts, such as: Natasha Kahn of Bat For Lashes, Beans, MIA, Santigold and Spankrock. Mainstream clients include Karen O, Beyonce, Fergie, Paula Abdul, Lindsay Lohan, Eve, Janet Jackson, Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Leona Lewis, Gwen Stefani, Peaches, Katy Perry and Britney Spears.

Jules Kim’s designs convey concepts that reflect American propaganda for the empowerment of women, the innocence of childhood, and the dark humor of adulthood. She makes pieces that hang, hug, clip, cut, and curve. These objects accentuate the body and represent not only her personal statements but also each wearers’ interpretation of themselves and their environment. In order to express oneself, there must be a means of communication and jewelry is the instrument for Bijules.
