Unearthed from the dust, as if snatched out of the air (the way the songwriter described how he wrote many of his songs), is Sunshine Boy: The Unheard Studio Sessions & Demos 1971-1972. I don’t know about you, but nothing else musically could stoke me as much as this news. Just like when I was 25 years old and scratching my head, asking myself, “How have I not heard of this guy before?”, I have the same feeling upon hearing about this release this morning; 28 unreleased studio “throwaway” tracks and different mixes recorded by Townes Van Zandt, the world’s greatest songwriter, have been found and are to be released today.

Every Justice of the Unicorns release gets a little more catchy and a little more serious. Band leader, Rusty Dungan, sounds less like he’s laughing at his own songs on this Double-Single entitled This Old House that releases on Decemeber 1. It’s only two songs, but you’ll play them over and over. Barely controlled twang, a lo-fi vibe, and multiple vocal overdubs gives hint to what the next full length Justice of the Unicorns album might have in store for your happy ears.

David Thomas Jones, leader of the Austin rock troop Watch Out For Rockets, decided to go rogue for a few moments and do a solo record. His role in Watch Out For Rockets already entails most of the writing, recording and playing of instruments on said recordings, which have all been captured on a Tascam 4-track cassette machine. Jones, admittedly, isn’t too good with gadgetry. However, his songwriting prowess is a mean machine. Jones stepped into a real studio for his first solo EP, entitled Comfort Creatures. The 7 songs on this 24-minute mini-masterpiece cover styles ranging from rock, folk, psychy pop and even some fancy danciness. Keep an eye and ear on David Thomas Jones, the Austin, TX 3-name-man-machine of music. And it officially releases today.

I didn’t think San Francisco’s Ty Segall could rock much harder after his Slaughterhouse album just released a few months ago. But his third LP of the year (!), Twins, is pretty much the apex of his recording career. Each release is better than the previous one. Twins, recorded with a little more hi-finess allows the overdubbed tracks of solos to cut through, and the monolithic fuzz axes sound like a razorblade slicing through a cinder block. This record is less “garage rock”, which I personally like. It’s great to see a boy turning into a man before your very eyes. What will the insanely prolific Ty Segall do next? Better enjoy Twins while you can, because he’s probably got 10 more new songs already.

David Bronson definitely has a way with words. On his debut release, Story, he works catchy hooks and melodies into the ears with a seemingly uncanny ease while ACTUALLY telling stories – a rare songwriting craft that should still matter but, unfortunately, is almost non-existent in today’s indie world. From rockers like Times and chill tunes like Easier, Bronson and his band run the rock and folk gamut up and down with a breath of welcomed honesty.

I saw a new music documentary weeks ago that still has me asking myself questions as to how I had never heard of Rodriguez before. Searching For Sugarman is the surreal and true story of Sixto Rodriguez, a singer/songwriter from 70s Detroit who basically fell off the face of the earth right when his music began to touch American hearts.

The AWOL Rodriguez became an overnight sensation in South Africa, thus a worldwide manhunt began to try and debunk his death find him. Searching For Sugarman touches all human emotions on a level that is difficult to describe. Upon the films ending, I wanted to join the search, to wander off and find this ghost of urbia who wrote and strummed such haunting and pretty songs. It just so happens that he is alive and well, and he’s touring.

Dinosaur Jr. is back with a surprisingly righteous record, I Bet On Sky. Not since the early days of JayLouMurphdom has a Dino album been this solid. The previous 2 releases since the regrouping of the original 3 members in 2005 seemed a bit rushed and created out of pure duty, but ‘I Bet On Sky’ recaptures the organic songwriting and classic sound that one of indie rock’s most important trios has to blast forth. Yep, they still got it.

Almost an homage to early 90′s indie rock, the debut release, Teenage Pagans, by Technicolor Teeth is making my ears very happy. As a longtime fan of early Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, insert-relative-bands-here, I find it refreshing to hear something that takes influences seriously and does right by them. They hail from Wisconsin, the land of cheese, but leave that at the factory and wail weirdness and gay fuzz beautifully and sometimes spastic. I highly recommend acclimating to these guys with a good pair of can-headphones and plenty of volume.

What happens when you turn loose a hyper once Def Leppard air-guitarring-prog-space-psych-rocker in a room full of Eventide gadgets, a wall of synth and a couple other folks who are ready and willing to learn and riff along? That would be the brand new, catchy drop from Ape School (Michael Johnson), entitled Junior Violence (Hometapes). One can’t really compare this record to anything prerequisite. It’s Michael at the controls at his most precise, tender and honest under the Ape School moniker. Whoa, I really dug that song! What was that sound? The best way I can describe it is Conan the Barbarian sticking two forks into a powerstrip. You have to hear it for yourself.
