My friend Victoria F. Gaitán decorates her portrait subjects with meat or blood or candy to create intimidating baroque flesh and blood still lifes. London based Bif creates creates really great promos and commercials. Elements is just something they did for fun, and like much of their work, is wonderfully weird and funny. I think work like this is emblematic of the new visual possibilities offered by more accessible and powerful CG software.

I was pleased to be an artist in residence at the innovative desktop 3D printing company MakerBot Industries. Takeshi Murata was another artist in residence and he printed a mind-blowing 3D zoetrope recently on view at Frieze art fair in London. It was related to his wonderful I, Popeye animation.

Yoann Lemoine directs beautiful, poignant music videos and commercials. Like most of his work, the recent video Wastin Time by The Shoes beautifully executes a simple and poetic idea. You don’t always see ‘less is more’ applied to the short moving image art form, so it is nice to see someone who can pull it off.

My latest series, Metropolitan, explores imagery associated with wealth and secretive power. A former Vanderbilt estate is blackened and decorated with regalia while the Alibi club comprising Washington DC’s most powerful men takes on the properties of fabric, gently blowing in the wind. It’s an ongoing series that happens to be quite relevant at the moment.
