To the naked eye, the night sky seems to be a fixed, unchanging darkness. But astounding beauty is hidden just beyond the limits of our (unaided) human perception. As the Earth rotates, time-lapse photography captures what our eyes can’t perceive, and it is breathtaking. This video was photographed in 2011 in South Dakota, Utah and Colorado. Randy Halverson’s work attracted the attention of Bear McCreary, a composer who wrote the music for the TV show Battlestar Galactica, so he scored Halverson’s timelapse just for the hell of it. Brian Joseph Davis has used law enforcement ‘photo-fit’ software to create composite sketches from descriptions of literary characters. ‘I started with my bookshelf, which seemed the obvious place’, Davis says. ‘Then I had to find writers who described their characters enough, which required either knowing books’ contents really, really well.’ Or scanning them and looking for keywords (‘eye’, ‘ear’, ‘hair’). The result is a mighty strange combination of literary criticism and forensics. If you can think of a well-described classic character he should consider doing next, email him. The term ‘painting with light‘ can encompass many different types of art, but this is a new twist on the idea of making art with light and shadow.

Rashad Alakbarov, who hails form Azerbaijan, is no stranger to the art scene having shown at the Venice Biennale in 07. A shadow master extraordinaire, Alakbarov uses various translucent items, such as empty water bottles and light bulbs, as well as scrap and random things like miniature aeroplanes and toys, in his creation process. Once they are all suspended and lit up, the results are astounding.

Tim Mantoani has just brought out a book of his photographic series, Behind Photographs: Archiving Photographic Legends, which consists of 150 portraits shot on 20” x 24” Polaroid film. The portraits are of world-class photographers with their iconic images.

Mataoni feels that people need to understand that iconic images don’t just happen, that there is an artist behind the lens who creates them: ‘Without these people and their understanding of photography, these moments would not be there for us to understand and appreciate over the course of time’, he says.

Using body paints, costumes, make-up and endless patience, Peruvian-born artist Cecilia Paredes camouflages herself into the backgrounds of her photographic performance pieces. In her desire to blend with, and become one with, the landscape around her, she is recalling themes of relocation, displacement and migration.

Using fossil fuels and gunpowder, and aided by film industry special effects technicians, Geoffrey Short created and photographed explosions as a way of ‘exploring the relationship between terror and the sublime’. Shot in New Zealand, each explosion is created mid air to minimise the effects and damage to the environment.

Round trip: Art from the Bone Yard Project was conceived by Eric Firestone. The Bone Yard Project resurrects disused airplanes from America’s military history, taking entire airplanes and their elements out of aeronautic resting spots in the desert, known as ‘bone yards’, and putting them into the hands of contemporary artists. An abandoned DC3 comes to life with a striking picture of an eagle leading men through the skies, and the idealized dreams of flight are able to soar once again in our collective imagination. With a nod to the airplane graffiti and ‘nose art’ that became popular during WWII, the project offers a vision of the wonder by which humanity takes to the air through some of the most prominent and acclaimed artists working today.

If you go down to the woods today you may come across photographer Jürgen Heckel. Known for his hauntingly sparse landscape photography, the photo series Wald explores seemingly vast and primeval forests so devoid of human intervention that you could believe he may be the first person to visit there. Huge tree trunks are silent sentries; shafts of light illuminate copper leaves, casting spotlights on moss-covered ground in his silently brooding ‘treescapes’.

Constructing Space began when I realised that NASA hand-colour their images of space. Disillusioned, I created my own space images that, like NASA’s, were a little bit truthful and a little bit fake. I paint with light in my darkroom, making colour photograms of 4,565 billion year-old meteorite particles. Their trace on the light sensitive photographic paper creates the stars in my ‘galaxies’. In 2011, a digital copy of one of these photograms went into space on board NASA’s Space Shuttle Endeavour.

Lost At E Minor readers are no strangers to Darcy Prendergast’s animation company, OH YEAH WOW, and their work with the band All India Radio. Their film for Lucky by All India Radio was their first light painting collaboration. It involves a painstaking animation technique: ‘painting the air’ with glow sticks, usually taking a whole night to shoot.

When Carl Sagan coined the phrase ‘pale blue dot’ describing planet earth floating in the starry darkness, he couldn’t have imagined the way the human crew onboard the International Space Station see earth at night. Using NASA’s time-lapse footage, Michael König’s beautiful video shows the ethereal glow of the Aurora Borealis and earth’s twinkling cities lit up each night.

Lana Sator snuck into a space rocket factory near Moscow and took these stunning photos reminiscent of lost scenes from some epic sci-fi movie. Whilst the site might look decrepit and abandoned, the factory is fully active and the Russian government is not impressed with Sator’s little adventures into forbidden territory. The authorities have sent her letters saying that her situation will get ‘much worse’ if she keeps posting photos from the factory.

Richard Mosse’s photo series, The Fall, includes images of aircraft downed and almost forgotten in remote areas around the globe. He made the photographs of crashed aircraft in distant parts of the world using an 8 x 10 camera and colour negative film. The project’s themes are many: air disaster, mechanical archaeology, forgotten hidden relics, time, environment and scale.

Jeff Harris started his self-portrait photo-a-day project back in 1999, and 4,750 photographs later, he is still going strong. Now in it’s fourteenth year, the project highlights the changes wrought by daily life, as Harris’s images cover everything from reckless stunts to battles with illness. Be prepared for some graphic images of real life, warts and all.
