Cider is the new beer. Everyone knows this. But the problem is, just like beer, now the market is flooded with the full gamut of low and high quality drinks in a variety of appetising and not-so-appetising flavours. So how does the discerning cider drinker choose? One brand remains true to its roots — Henry of Harcourt, who produce traditional apple ciders and perry (pear cider) an hour north of Melbourne.

Not only do you cut down your food miles, these ciders are the real deal — deliciously fresh, made from varieties such as Pink Lady in dry styles. Cut through the sub-standard brews and give the HoH Duck and Bull a go — bone dry and at 9 percent, gives you quite a kick.

As the weather heats up, queues outside ice cream parlours and gelaterias grow as everyone’s minds turn from warming up to cooling down with their ice confectionary of choice. Strangely, given their tantalising combination of biscuit and icecream, the humble ice cream sandwich is an often overlooked option in the quest for the big cold delicious. Good friends Pat and Stick are bringing this forgotten treat of old back with their handmade gourmet icecream sandwiches, made fresh in Sydney.

Using only high-quality natural ingredients, these sweet treats are available at several retailers (find your nearest using their handy Facebook locator) throughout Sydney and Melbourne. Coming in nine too-good-to-resist flavours such as peppermint choc-chip and double Belgian choc, say good-bye to the waffle cone and get on board with Pat and Stick this Summer.

First world problems such as ‘which imported beer should I drink tonight?’ will soon have more wide-reaching consequences with the imminent (fingers crossed) opening of Shebeen, a new Melbourne watering hole cum international development from entrepeneur Simon Griffiths.

Griffiths has teamed with Melbourne bar and design luminaries such as Vernon Chalker and Michael Anderson (of Madame Brussels and Gin Palace fame) to deliver a non-profit hospitality venue. The basic premise is that Shebeen will sell beer and wines from developing nations around the globe, and AUD$2 from each drink sold will be donated directly to a specific development project in that country. The Shebeen Social Investment Fund is currently accepting small and large-scale donations and aims to reach AUD$250,000 by 29 October, 2010. If you like the sound of combining philanthropy with pleasure, give generously so they can too.

Touted by the New York Times books blog and responsible for publishing some of Australia’s latest and greatest emerging talent, the Brow has published work from Christos Tsiolkas and Douglas Copeland. The Lifted Brow has carved its own cross-disciplinary niche in the magazine world and Issue # 7 features a Halloween story mash up, Benjamin Law and Michaela McGuire’s Adventures at the Wooroolin B&S Ball and illustrations by Tim Furie.
