As a nationally recognized voice in the style space, I live a fairly glamorous life. So when I heard my apartment bell ring the other day — quelle surprise! — it was a hand delivered pint of Chozen Ice Cream, to whom it’s handler had the unfortunate experience of finding me in my most bewitching ensemble to date: my robe. At 3pm in the afternoon. Very glamorous. Read more

Remember those paintings that if you squinted and stared intently at it for a really long time, another picture would appear to you in 3D? Well, these Matthew Williamson ikat-print, sheer silk mousseline pants are sort of that, but much comfier and perfect for lounging around on a Saturday afternoon. Read more

Animal rights activist group, PETA, is pretty aggressive when it comes to saving animals. So I don’t know how they would feel about this dangling fringe Porcupine quill necklace from Acid Zip. Made of delicate Porcupine quills strung together on a vintage brass chain, the quills double as protection against PETA. Wink wink.

Japan-based artist, Julien David, is a total nerd, and it shows with his latest geek chic collection that includes a tuxedo jacket made using computer keys. Appropriately named the 900 Jacket, it has 900 computer keys sewn onto wool material and is available for sale in speciality boutiques globally and, ironically, for purchase online.

Gone are the days when I could wink at you with ‘come hither’ eyes so you’ll see the intention of my emotions. Finnish designers, Chao and Erro jewelry have interpreted the long lost art of human-to-human emotional connection with their line of emoticon jewelry. Happy? Rock a smiley face. Feeling enthusiastic? Throw on an exclamation point! The simple rings, which are hand crafted of silver, speak louder than words.

Dressing for Prom can be so daunting! What if you buy the same dress as one of the other girls? This is not the case with Wisconsin teen, Tara Frey, whose mother, Kerrin, started collecting candy wrapper’s six years ago. Since then, and with over 40 hours of straight manpower, they’ve been crafting a candy wrapper dress, with shoes and a clutch to match. Talk about a sweet Prom style. My teeth hurt just talking about it.

They live on planet C and B, two kooky and creative 20 year-old twin sisters, who are taking the human world by storm with their fierce brand of sunglasses. Coco and Breezy create studded and bullet-holed over-sized signature shields, but a recent trip to Paris inspired a wearable art, glow in the dark accessory line, and most recently, they rolled out a children’s collection. These kids are alright. And wear their sunglasses at night.

Lace is the fabric du jour these days, with ladies rocking the antique trend — wearing a little bit on a shirt or a lot, as shown in these somewhat revealing outfits by Japanese label Somarta. Their ‘second skin’ collection is made entirely of lace body pieces to be bought as separates and worn together. I see London, I see France, I see someone’s underpants.

If gold fronts are just a little too flashy for you, head over to Salt Lake City where Steve Heward at Heward Dental Lab will give you a ‘dental tattoo‘, which is actually a crown onto which he or another one of his artists can paint an image of your choice.

I’m so excited to have stumbled across the work of Berkeley, California artist Weston Teruya. On first glance, his work feels purely abstract, like black and white grids with dots of colour here and there, undulating across clean backgrounds. On closer inspection, however, perfectly rendered chairs, life savers, netting, plants and various ephemera come to light. I’m always excited when I come across an artist who can so successfully merge the realistic and abstract, and Teruya does it with aplomb. Read more

Damn, ten years of playing guitar in loud rock bands, and not once did we have a slamming moshpit like this. Banging heads is so, so fun.

Things continue to improve for New York’s metal scene, if Batillus are any indication. The sludge/doom trio from Brooklyn offer crushingly heavy, down-tuned and down-tempo instrumental riffage that sounds like what a mutant that has crawled out of Newtown Creek might have on his iPod. The band recently added vocalist Fade Kainer of Inswarm (Jarboe’s touring band) to its line-up.
