All Quiet On The Western Front is one of those famous books that everyone knows about but not as many have actually read. I chanced upon a copy because my girlfriend had been given two copies by and stressed about planning for the album launch, I decided that 11pm last Wednesday was the right time to start this landmark novel and was up ’till 5am finishing it.
Woodburner is probably the worst kept secret in East London. As one of the very best folk nights around, and certainly with the best atmosphere, it started life at an abandoned pub, The George, in Clapton and soon attracted a huge following. With nothing but amazing musicians booked by Theo Bard, himself a great singer, the premise is pretty simple.
Our friends Matt and Lizzie recently opened a new cafe on Morning Lane in Hackney, Railroad, and it’s definitely our favourite place to get a coffee, a quick lunch, or take someone for dinner. Well known on the East London coffee circuit, Matt and Lizzie decided to set up on their own in this converted Nigerian barber shop. What makes it special, though, is the food, which is on another level (the Vietnamese baguette and cakes are my favourite!) and all super cheap.
Rozi Plain is my one of my favourite singers by a million miles. Part of the amazing DIY Fence Collective, her songs, lyrics and general approach to it all is completely at odds with almost anything else out there. I first met her through the enchanting This Is The Kit and we’ve played a few shows together. Her first album, Inside Over Here, is awesome. Humans is her latest single and first release on Need No Water Records.
