They say that in life to be happy is to appreciate the little things, but shorely that can include this outwardly fashionable largish piggy. I bumped into James and his owner one sunny morning in Sydney’s Redfern as they were off for there mornings stroll to feed on some delicious pastries. Needless to say I was as happy as a pig in Sh*t when I greeted this spotty trotter just as his mother spoke those famous words “home James”!

The last few years my life have changed drastically. Among the many changes, I traveled abroad for the first time, and in doing so, I found new places to call home. One place in particular was the Fortress of the Seven Towers in Istanbul. Sure it is uninhabitable, but this place is seriously cool. Once known as the Golden Gate, it was the official entrance into Istanbul, with surrounding walls defending against any enemy contenders. Upon visiting the fortress, step inside the towers, look up from below, and this is what you will see.

I first met the awesome Jessica Singh during a trip to Melbourne a few months ago. Jessica is a walking talking version of her work, a most colourful friendly gal. Browsing through her work you become drawn into the imagery through a common focal point. The eyes do tell it all and in this case they are the pot in which her seed is sewn. My favourite illustration would have to be Sierra for the simple reason being I love boats!

Toasty toast and melty cheese was always a favourite growing up. Sometimes alone, but mostly together, this happy couple created what is formerly known as the Jaffle. Many years have past since my last Jaffle, a delicious savoury snack that was at times a sweet toothed desert. Thankfully the wait is over as Sydney’s own Jafe Jaffles is popping up throughout town, creating these portable delights from their peculiar but trendy yellow Volkswagen Kombi.

I have always been a fan of hedge sculpting, a practice performed by gardeners whereby many hours of training and cutting are invested to create something usually beautiful and unique. Having spotted this in my locale, I began to wonder why one would blatantly give passers by the good old one fingered salute? I am not a fan of the finger but I love the oddity that presents itself in this carefully sculptured hedge.

I first saw the work of William Kentridge many years ago at Annandale Galleries here in Sydney. I was captivated by his aesthetic which meanders through various drawn, sculptured, filmed and animated mediums. So when I discovered his “Five Themes” exhibition was traveling through Melbourne after showing at New York’s Moma gallery I made sure I was there to see it. Of all of Kentridge’s work I definitely have a soft spot for his charcoal animations, the result of many hours drawing, erasing and filming. Here is a sneak peek!
