If you are an artist just starting to sharing your art on the Internet, you might be slightly taken aback by the resonating silence that follows your initial posts. A couple years back I wrote an article listing important lessons I’ve learned in the past decade of producing free music. This article, which really applies to all artists, resonated with quite a few people and was recently re posted on Headphone Commute.

Amon Tobin has been making forward thinking electronic music for over fifteen years. His latest effort, ISAM, which you can stream in its entirely, is unlike anything I’ve ever heard before. He’s bringing his album on tour with a stage show that matches the intensity of the album. As my friend Ryan said after the show, ‘that was important’.

If background music helps keep you on task, I’d heartily (and shamelessly) recommend you check out my instrumental downtempo tunes. I just put out my sixth album, Miles Tones, which you can freely download or stream on my website. My fifth album, Soulful Filling, was ranked #9 in the top 200 albums ever played in the 20 year history of the nationally syndicated radio show, Echoes.

As a father of a one and half year old, this video struck a chord with me: ‘A witty parody picture book for the gadget-crazy kid in all of us’. Indeed!

The goal of archive.org is to archive the Internet. It’s a non-profit organization that’s been around since 1996 and expanded to archive all sorts of other data as well. One of my favorite places on the Internet is the Live Music Archive, which has over 20,000 live music shows that you can stream and download for free.

There is a long standing tradition for jambands to don a ‘musical costume’ for Halloween and cover an album in its entirely. The band Umphrey’s McGee has taken this concept a step further by performing ‘live mashups‘ for their Halloween gigs. They cleverly juxtapose two songs on top of each other, and then proceed to tear the roof off. Highlights from this year were a Robert Palmer and Prince mashup (Addicted to Kiss) and a MGMT and Nirvana mashup (Come As Your Kids).

No one can really describe what it’s like to attend Burning Man, the annual gathering of artists in the Nevada desert. It’s much like trying to describe Las Vegas: until you go, its hard to fathom the sheer scale of things. This amazing timelapse chronicles the entire event from the building of the city until it is completely dismantled.

I came across Guim Tió Zarraluki’s work recently and have become completely absorbed with his disturbing, yet strangely compelling and open portraits. His combining of cartoonish and realistic elements bring the viewer in completely. Read more

In this post-everything mash-up culture, it’s still sometimes disarming to see how a small tweak can completely change the meaning of iconic images. Read more

There are two kinds of metalheads: those that are drawn by the hyper masculine, angry, aggressive aspect of metal, and those that are drawn by its Wagnerian drama, themes of pagan nature worship, and disdain towards modern civilization. The line between the latter and hippies is quite thin. I am one of these sorts of metal fans, which is why I also really love bands like The Lickets, an empyrean, luminously beautiful, experimental folk collective. They make music that makes you feel like a tiny speck floating in the vast oceans of existence, perfect for a night of star gazing, just like Burzum’s fourth album, Filosifem.
