Diego Meijido retouched some work for me a while back and, frankly, his new site via the Cargo platform deserves the eyes of the world. Originally from Spain and now based in Dublin (via the UK), Meijido’s work has an ethereal quality to it, evoking a state of reverie for the viewer. I’ve seen the ‘before and afters’ and his treatment of skin tones, colour, atmosphere and contrast really takes you to another world.

I’ve come to this action packed short a little late, but ‘better late’ and all that. Without giving away the ending, interesting things happened within the Republic of Ireland during the Second World War. Nick Ryan who directed this short triggers some questions for me with the ending, and the score composed by Nick Seymour and Brian Crosby (of Crowded House and BellX1 notoriety respectively) fits perfectly with Ryan’s story. I’d be interested to see this turned into a feature.

A stunning series of vignettes shot by DP Nicolas Karakatsanis, this short really pushes the brothers’ work forward in short form … wonder what’s next? Designed and executed by the creative team at Piranha Bar Dublin this beautiful set of sponsorship stings were seen over 600 times during the Olympic broadcast. After a motion capture session was shot in the UK, the guys created the final abstracted and colourful animations for delivery to the TV audience.

I recently had lunch with Steve Simpson after a video shoot we were doing together. The man is a serious talent. As a professional illustrator, he was explaining to me that sometimes, he has to just illustrate something for himself. Magic Monkey was the result this time. Simpson was born in the UK and has worked on animated series’ like Danger Mouse and the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

I found the illustrations of Fabian Ciraolo whilst trawling through some Tumblr site. I stuck up his Dorothy and Salvador above my desk and every creative that has come to chat to me stops and says out loud ‘Wow, who did THAT?’ And then I tell them, Fabian Ciraolo. So now I’m telling you. Who else would be mashing up pop culture references, like what looks like Lana Del Rey’s body with Judy Garland as Dorothy and Salvador Dali in a Vampire Weekend tee? I love it.

Dublin art director Kirk Bannon recently showed me this spectacular shot taken from his window whilst staying in New York’s Palace Hotel. If you’re a fan of type, you’ll recognize the iconic signage from the New York Magazine sign, which was replaced by Burberry in 2009. What are the odds of capturing this moment? Type strapped down, just before the truck drives away. I don’t think anyone else in the world has this photograph in their personal collection.

I was looking at the top images of 2011, for some reason. I couldn’t help notice the similarities between Eisenstaedt’s iconic 1945 VJ Day Times Square Kiss and Rich Lam’s iconic shot from last year (2011) taken in Vancouver (Getty). A similar sort of subject composition can be seen.

Notice how the male takes the dominant upper left with the female taking lower right position (the same can be seen in classic Hollywood love film posters). And we can see some background detail, but not too much. The image tone and sense of ’the moment’ is similar. However, the emotional intensity is far different due to the tone of the scene in 2011 and also the ominous riot cop, out of focus, in the foreground of Lam’s 2011 shot. The difference between eras is also interesting from a social perspective.

It is an old pig barn, but no one is allowed inside. This is his studio space. This is freedom from noise for Irish artist Paul Hughes, even though he paints with CD albums on loop for hours. Certainly, no one is allowed to watch him paint. I was lucky enough to shoot Irish artist Paul Hughes painting and capture an insight into his process and inspiration. This is the latest in my series of Amongst Inspiration films, featuring top Irish creatives.

I met these boys a few weeks ago in a creative meeting talking shop. Four Irish lads with far too much animation talent for a country of only four million. They call themselves simply Giant. Directed by dynamic Dublin duo, Mark Duggan and Gareth Averill, this new promo for indie poppers The Delorentos makes great use of a tight crop and a monochromatic grade. Taken from their new album, Little Sparks, this is the kind of performance video that reminds you Robert Browning knew what he was talking about when it came to creating. Less IS more.
