The police are known pranksters, handing outtickets for no reason, converting tax money into donuts etc. The Vermont State Police found out that they where pranked: a pig was pictured very subtle in the logo on 30 of their cruisers (one of the spots on the cow). It turned out an inmate working in the print shop of Northwest State Correctional Facility modified the printing-program. NYC design label Kikkerland modified police badges into beer-openers: ‘Police, open up’.

I designed this large suspended lamp as a tribute to the universal art of hand-shadows; making shadows on the wall using your hands to create birds, rabbits, and other figures. Playing with light and hand shadows is a centuries old past-time, long before electric light was invented. Bird In Hand plays with this concept: all of the hands are positioned to look like a flock of birds, flying out in circles.

The shadows cast on the wall looks like birds. This results in a very expressive, dynamic and striking looking lamp, with layers of humor and poetry hidden in the design. The lamp is made of Ecolotek, a durable, fully compostable material composed of natural hemp-fibers, minerals and binder. It was developed and designed for www.planktonstation.nl.

An article in a Dutch Newspaper stating that the use of electronic gadgets alone is responsible for the forthcoming creation of an extra 30 power plants in the very near future, made Michiel van der Kley decide to do something extra as a designer. Having designed furniture for 20 years, he wanted to design things that not only look cool but might be meaningful as well. The Wheeler is an attempt to bring together energy and activity. When you exercise for half an hour, you produce enough energy to power your device: you work on your health, you do not use any fossil fuel while doing it, and on top of it all, you are independent. Bam!

I thought smart phones where mostly social tools. “I-SPEX” (Spectropolarimeter for Planetary EXploration) turns your iPhone into a scientific instrument. SPEX enhances the lens of the iPhone in such a way that you can measure the pollution in the air: especially PM (Particulate Matter). Developer and scientist Frans Snik’s first goal is to use it in the biggest Dutch citizen science experiment: 10000 people will measure the local air on the same day. The info can be used to map air pollution and hopefully help to do something about it.

For a radio show, they where asked to do a recent pop chart 40 song meant as a joke. They took 15 minutes to cover the cheesy pop song I Will Follow. This cover went straight to number one in the charts making them famous mainstream musicians after playing 15 years in the underground circuit. People who liked their I Will Follow version and went to see them were in for a surprise: their other songs have nothing to do with the cheesy pop they became famous for.

Dinner table LOCK is designed from the qualities, possibilities and characteristics of its highly sustainable material: bamboo. The frame is built up from layers of flexible bamboo, while the shape is formed by the bamboo’s natural bending curve. The end result is a mix of nature and mathematics, of possible and impossible: a super strong masculine dynamic shape that looks different watched from different viewing points.
