Thomas Lee is a photo-journalist based in Hong Kong who gives a compassionate glimpse of everyday people from a unique viewpoint. I first met Lee at school, where he was one of the few classmates who really had an artistic eye, and he’s been pushing the boundaries ever since I met him.

After working in Asia for three years, I stumbled upon an idea: over the next six months, locals and fellow travelers painted on my shoes, and I recorded video of the process. My shoes brought me to the Philippines, China, and Mongolia, through waterfalls, ocean water and desert sand. Together we crossed paths with dogs, pandas, and even whale sharks, and they introduced me to many amazing people. People humbled me with their generosity and hospitality towards a stranger. And all these people, these new friends, left their own mark upon me and my shoes.

Lieko Shiga manipulates the physical world of photography to create images of mystery and hidden depth. She was born in Japan, but went to the Chelsea School of Art in London to study, even though she hardly knew English. In the same way she had to come to a new place to learn photographer, looking at her work is akin to stepping into a new world.

Ai Weiwei might be one of the most influential artists of his time. Best known for his work on the Beijing Olympics’ Birdnest stadium, he is China’s most famous dissident artist, openly protesting his country’s government. Having been detained for 81 days, beaten by cops, with his Shanghai studio demolished, and fined $2 million by authorities, it’s a wonder he has the strength to carry on. Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry is a documentary about his struggle which opened at Sundance to acclaim.

Caravan Palace is a French electro swing band I can’t help but dance to whenever I hear one of their songs. They just came out with their second album a couple months ago, and their music has really grown on me over time. They are influenced by swing era music.

Hong Kong might be the perfect city to have superheroes, with one skyscraper after another practically rubbing against one another. Spiderman would have no issues with mobility around the city. Chow Kar Hoo takes this idea to an extreme by putting well-known heroes in extremely mundane situations around the city. Hellboy sits down for some hotpot; while Wolverine slices cutlets at the butcher shop. Hong Kong is already a strange mix of East and West. Throw in superheroes and they fit right in.

Maleonn is a Shanghai-based photographer whose painterly works show off a dreamlike world. The subject of his photos oftentimes blend into the overwhelming atmosphere of his work. When I first saw an exhibition of his in Shanghai, his photos were placed in a space filled with old objects, almost as if you were walking into one of his photos and becoming a part of his space.
