The first time I ran across Sarah Morrison’s photography, I was perusing psychedelic bands on line. The photo that caught my eye was of a model in a very cool dress, flanked by members of The Electric Prunes.

I found her on Facebook and immediately began exploring her work. All of it is fantastic! People float in mid air; models become part of the scenery, and vice versa. She employs pop art, rock fashion, magic and a dash of eroticism.

The Luck of Eden Hall was very fortunate to have recently played a show with Umbra and the Volcan Siege. I watched in awe as Jim Licka played a real Mellotron on the stage. It was white and quite small and not anything like what I had pictured in my mind for all these years.

Jim and his mates (two drummers, three guitars, bass guitar) used it to great effect, along with a visual slide show. Umbra gives you everything you would want to see in a progressive outfit: melodic, screaming grooves that quench your thirst like a gasoline-laced beaker of sweet absinth. Good stuff!

My friend Gail Potocki first introduced me to Jeremy Bastian’s beautiful illustrations: incredibly detailed drawings inked with a very fine brush. Upon viewing the image he drew of an octopus playing the cello with swords, I found my hand thrust in my pocket grasping for my wallet.

To peruse his annual comic, Cursed Pirate Girl, is a mind-blowing experience that I highly recommend — if you can get your hands on one. This is stunning stuff.

Your Psych Tunes was one of the first MySpace pages I discovered devoted to psychedelia. Somebody had taken the time to gather a wonderful collection of site links for mind travelers to browse and had placed some interesting underground bands on the music player. It was great stuff.

I learned that behind it all was Celina Ozymandias (O, Osuna, Ozymandias, the Queen of Psych) and she has many talents as well as monikers. She’s published two books of poetry (Sir, I Exist!, As She Flies), plays in a few different bands (Los Tentakills, The Sugar Skulls, Golden Sons of Glycon) and creates cool South-Western works of art.

Gail Potocki is a Detroit painter and symbolist. You may wish to take her images at face value, but upon further exploration, you’ll find engaging puzzle pieces that hold the answer to a riddle, an urgent story. She uses oils as a medium and usually hand builds a unique frame for each of the works created.
