I love being busy, and I think I do a pretty good job at it, but Donald Glover puts me and every other workaholic out there to shame.
Full disclosure, I do a lot of hosting work for these guys, so I’m biased. But I started as a fan, and I still think that Radio 3 is light years ahead of anyone else when it comes to internet broadcasting. If there’s any justice, in a few years when internet radio is the norm, people will look back at what Radio 3 is doing now and recognise that they more or less laid the tracks for the whole damn thing.

Their opinions almost always mirror my own pretty much exactly. I got more star struck visiting their offices and meeting my favourite writers than I get meeting most musicians I admire.

A book that covers the gold rush, the Spainish-American war, and the lives of a dozen people involved in one or the other should feel substantial.

A lot of people I know unjustly think of Randy Newman as the perennial Oscar-contending writer of schlocky soundtrack songs. I thought that myself. But buying the first volume of this series started me on the path to redemption.

Volume II confirms that Newman is more than just a gifted composer (though he is that, some of the melodies here will break your heart). He’s also probably the most darkly funny lyricist there is. Who else could write a song about bringing back a slave from Mexico and then replacing Bruce Springstein as The Boss and call it My Life Is Good?
