I was recently visiting my friend Michel Lagarde, an illustration agent and publisher in Paris, and besides falling in love with his amazing collection of drawings by artists like Sempé, Georges Lepape, and Ronald Searle, I fell for the small collection of comic books he has just published. When it comes to illustration, there’s a certain freshness in good children’s picture books that I don’t seem to find anywhere else. It’s as if it were a playground instead of a canvas or a mere book page. Two of my favorite children’s book illustrators are Tomi Ungerer and the Italian artist, Emanuele Luzzati [above], who I discovered recently in Rome, but have never seen here in the States, even though he’s been around forever. I recently did a series of five illustrations for the new literary magazine, Canteen. What I like about it is that it’s not pretentious. What you see is what you get. Its founder, Stephen Pierson, is a professional poker player and his sole motivation to put this project together is giving quality exposure to artists, writers and photographers who are doing work worth being recognized. Their next issue is coming out in November and submissions are welcome. [illustration by Fernanda Cohen]

How can you not love a band called ¡Apeshit!? Their name says it all. I got to catch these guys tour at a warehouse in Bed-Stuy the other night as they were capping off their most recent tour, and even though there were only 20 or so people in the audience by the time they went on, their set was absolutely epic, culminating in frontman Pat Berran being hoisted up and subsequently dropped by the drunken, sweaty, and heavily tattooed crowd. If you love fast, spastic, intensely brutal punk, this band will make you crap your pants.
