This is the best DIY thing ever. In their words: ‘Choose Yer Own is a festival based on sweet adventure, and built around a love for Calgary and the many great projects that happen here. Choose Yer Own is a collaborative festival. Anybody can put anything on, which means the festival is always unpredictable and surprising, and also meaning that the festival is built by you: the participants, passerbys, and accidental organizers of the various events’.

Weird Canada is a music review site that ‘aims to highlight the emerging and boundary pushing musical adventures taking place in Canada, with a focus on regional peculiarities’. I first came across Weird Canada in 2009; they were one of the first websites to review How the Beach Boys Sound to Those With No Feelings (our debut EP). Weird Canada covers a lot of the bands that many other Canadian review sites won’t touch – at least not on their own terms.

Extra Happy Ghost!!! doesn’t sell many records. As a result, I work a couple of jobs to help pay rent and subsidize touring. My main job is as a reference assistant at the Calgary Public Library (we have a great library system here and it employs a number of artists and musicians like myself), and twice a week, I also work at Milk Tiger. I’ve worked here for a year, but I have been coming here for much longer. A very cool, conversational place, with fantastic cocktails.

In their own words: ‘Bug Incision is two things: A label, mostly dealing with limited edition cd-rs, and the occasional cassette. Not necessarily limited to those things. The point is more that the work can be done entirely in-house. The focus has shifted slightly from documenting the scene in Calgary to including international communities and players. If you think you have a recording you’d like to release, by all means, please contact us’.

I’ve been coming to this place since I was a kid. Hot Wax sells new and used vinyl, tapes, and CD’s, and features a tonne of local releases (ours included). The shop has a tiny little stage in the basement for in-store performances. Through the years, Hot Wax has employed some really creative people from the local music scene.
I just caught up with Portland artist Stephanie Simek about her unconventional work and living situation: ‘I live in Portland, Oregon, in a former Hare Krishna temple that my partner Adam and I turned into an art and music space called Rererato. We host events about once or twice a week’. Read more
LEGO this, LEGO that, LEGO and make something clever, just like British artist Aaron Savage did. He recreated seminal album covers out of his childhood obsession. Hmmm, Aaron, please do a LEGO version of Coldplay next. It would probably have more charisma than the real thing. Read more

Inhae Renee Lee’s absolutely adorable and downright hysterical blog follows the adventures of two teeth out in the world. The wonderful stories combined with the carefully constructed photographs make for an entirely enchanting experience.
How can you not love a band called ¡Apeshit!? Their name says it all. I got to catch these guys tour at a warehouse in Bed-Stuy the other night as they were capping off their most recent tour, and even though there were only 20 or so people in the audience by the time they went on, their set was absolutely epic, culminating in frontman Pat Berran being hoisted up and subsequently dropped by the drunken, sweaty, and heavily tattooed crowd. If you love fast, spastic, intensely brutal punk, this band will make you crap your pants.
