Painter and animator Katy Dove seems to visualise the sliding, bold movements of what it is to be and to feel human. Dove paints in watercolour and scans her images into the computer, overlaying them with duplicated paper cutouts. Read more

Swiss-born Ben Strebel grew up in London where he’s beginning to make a name for himself as self-taught VJ and creative director. Having already worked for the likes of Madness and Stereo MCs, he’s also lent his name to the work of Armand van Helden and Fatboy Slim with his bass-heavy visuals and energetic approach to creativity. Aside from this, he counts his weekly resident VJ antics at London’s 333 as ‘a hobby’ alongside his work for Guerilla Vision. Quoting his influences as Chris Cunningham and Spike Jones, his visual décor accompanies music videos and commercials, though he modesty describes it thus: ‘I do it because I’m a bedroom geek’.

This time of year, the office is invariably inundated with tins of shiny, wrapped chocolate from stationery suppliers and courier companies. Now, I am not one of those ‘I just love chocolate at my desk’ kind of people, though I will happily reach for whatever’s nearby while at work. But these grey sea salt-chrystalled ‘tiles’ have caught everyone unawares. Dark to the point of blindness and embellished with fine crusts of salt flakes and spices, they leave a warm, almost reddening flavour in your throat and seem to satisfy the mid-afternoon need for the sweet and the savoury. Packaged in a sophisticated and simple royal blue, as if a jewel, Poco Dolce chocolates are neither fussy nor complicated, rather a solid and — dare I say it — thoughtful chocolate. One is never quite enough. [see also In’t Veld chocolate and read about the new Nestle factory outside of Paseo Tollocan]

A new idea has emerged in Norway that we think could be the precursor to things to come in the way our societies interact and develop. The general gradual demise of traditional gathering places such as town halls, community centers and churches has seemingly gone in hand with a generational shift and sharp increase in online virtual communities. However, humans still need to rub shoulders at some point to get things done, until, say, we perfect the sensitive hologram. Read more

Jelle Martens combines three things I love in his In the Quivering Forest series: nature, geometric shapes, and fabulous retro colors. His perfectly balanced compositions weave together photographs and blocks of color in a refreshingly unique way.

Says Van She bassist and vocalist Matt Van Schie about the Bush Tetras track — Too Many Creeps — from 1982: ‘I LOOOVE this tune. It opens with a perfect snare roll, and then the counter bass and guitar rhythms make it so cool. The lyrics are even more valid today. They’re one of my favourite bands of all time, and so many people try to do what they did for real. What a time! I wish I was born back then in New York, hanging out with these kids. Ahhhh!!’

This house on two levels of medium size was built on a hill on a trapezoidal plot in a suburb in the district of Hyogo, overlooking Osaka Bay, with whitewashed walls and a sloping pitched roof. Read more

Fashion blogger Tavi is biting, witty, articulate, and stylish for any age. The fact that she’s only twelve makes her kind of over-the-top amazing. Already an accomplished photographer and astute critic of all things wearable, the sarcastic pre-teen is probably sick of being described as precocious, but she’s the very definition of the word.

Grinning Cat is a beautiful electronic album from prodigious Japanese producer, Susumu Yokota. It borrows liberally from the melodic melancholy of classical music and features subtle drum loops throughout. We interviewed him about the artwork that he creates for each release. Read more
