This is the first clip from my new band. We’re based around a character called Duke Batavia, a ukulele playing Dutch-Indonesian sailor and scoundrel who died in 1967. So we wanted the clip to feel old and new. We made it using a 99 cent iPhone app, a scalpel and a bottle of scotch. Look out for a cameo from the young Tielman Brothers towards the end.

We took about three weeks to make our video. The day after we put it out, my friend Emma Heeney posted on Facebook that she was making a video that day. By that night, it was posted online. Smart-arse. Shot live, with the most amazing bunch of backing singers, including Angie Hart, Georgia Fields and Sophie Koh, this is fragile and lovely and warm.

The Tielman Brothers were an amazing early rock n roll band who pioneered a style of music called ‘Indorock’ – big in Holland and Germany in the early 60’s and made by displaced Dutch-Indonesian kids. Lead guitarist Andy Tielman played like Hendrix, Dick Dale and Scotty Moore before those guys existed. He passed away in November.

What I like the most about Dylan Martorell is that he does really intricate, beautiful printmaking but seems happiest breaking synthesisers and pieces of rubbish apart and sticking them back together to make musical instruments that look like they could make contact with ET’s home planet. I have a tattoo of a bird that Martorell drew. He’s seen it and is cool with it, but I owe him a meatball wrap.
