San Francisco photographer Todd Hido’s book House Hunting introduced me to long exposures as more than just ‘something cool a camera can do’. Taking photos of suburban houses at night, Hido portrays neighborhoods with an isolation and loneliness that’s hard to find in photography.

Of all the Nashville bands that are ‘bursting onto the National scene’ right now, PUJOL is probably one of the only ones I would still care about were he not from my town. With catchy as hell choruses, a gritty sonic aesthetic, and the lyrics to support it all, my only complaint is that he hasn’t released a full album yet.

Lead by former Oblivion, Greg Cartwright, The Reigning Sound take the power and fury of the Oblivion’s garage-punk and add a classic R&B and soul layer. Cartwright came into his own as a songwriter with these songs, as well as showing us how to completely own a cover: as evident by their version of Stormy Weather [above].

It’s a moustache contest, and it takes place during the month of May. Participants upload a photo a day of their follicle progress. They have themes for these photos and people vote for the “Mayor of Stacheville”. I know what you’re thinking, but it has just a little bit more class than a simple beard contest. Pretty sure it’s the oldest moustache contest on the interwebs and this year is the last.
