Created by art school dropout and kick-ass artist, Molly Crabapple, this alternative drawing movement mixes one part grungy art type, one part underground performer, and one part divey bar into a fizzy cocktail of awesomeness.

Whether you’re a serious artist or someone who just found a pen and paper in your back pocket, you can go to one of these drawing sessions (they are now in about 100 cities in the world), pay a small fee, and draw cool burlesque performers and alternative art-models, and maybe have a drink or two for inspiration!

If you’ve ever used the Freecycle Network, you know that there is quite a lot of kooks on those boards looking to give away some crazy stuff like shark fetuses, broken baby gates and old cereal. This is where my little old blog Freakcycle comes in.

I find the funniest and most bizarre postings on Freecycle and poke fun at them mercilessly until I fall out of my chair. I like the greedos looking for brand new Camaros and iPods on Freecycle: asking for the moon and only getting my scorn. You’re quite welcome, I’m a natural at it.

Australian-based artist Scott Bain combines two of my all-time favorite obsessions, bugs and sculpture, and makes beautifully strange sci-fi scenarios out of taxidermied insects, plastic figures and tiny found objects that make a statement about humans’ almost mindless drive to make nature conform to our will, needs, wants and desires without ever considering that nature does just fine on its own, without our intervention.

Joe Fenton has had a string of successes that any artist would give his right hand for: working with the likes of director Terry Gilliam (Brazil, 12 Monkeys) as a film concept designer and sculptor as well as with companies like Disney and Miramax.

He’s a children’s book illustrator, and oh yeah, I forgot to mention that he only started drawing a year and a half ago and is already making murals that would blow Hieronymous Bosch’s mind were he still alive and kicking. Holy crap, I’m envious as hell.

I remember playing Dungeons & Dragons with my brother and god-brothers in a Long Island basement pretty much all through the winter for a good year or so.
