During the 1960s, hundreds of manuals, guidebooks, covers, and posters were created to promote NASA and their events. The posters are filled with vintage typography, classy artwork, and retro colors. Welcome to a book lover’s paradise. The streets of Melbourne have been installed with 10,000 discarded books, overflowing and filling in empty public spaces with pure, serene literature. The lovely pages were lit up with LEDs to create a scene for the modest power of the written word. On the last night of the one-month installation, visitors were offered to take home the overflowing books, and even some passerby cars were gifted with these. This ephemeral installation, by Luzinterruptus, reflects the wonder of books and its grand balance of words and imagination.

There is no place like home, especially when you’re walking there in a pair of GPS Shoes. Inspired by Dorothy from Wizard of Oz, Dominic Wilcox has created a fully functional prototype pair of shoes that will guide you home no matter where you are in the world. Equipped with LED lighting and a GPS system, the shoes are activated by clicking the heels (Dorothy style) when the destination is uploaded through a USB cable and mapping software. In the shoes there is a progress bar with one red light at the beginning of the journey and it ends on the green light when you arrive. The correct direction to walk is shown by the illumination of one of the LEDs on the circle.

Designed by Croatian graphic designer, Mihael Miklošić, the kit showcases the stereotypical aspects of what defines a hipster. All materials were printed in his home workshop using his custom craft paper.

Who says you can’t write your name with galaxies?! This stellar website (pun intended) writes messages in real galaxies in the form of the alphabet. Each galaxy that resembles a letter is generated according to the message the user wants to ‘galaxify’. Users can generate different combinations of galaxies to best resemble their phrase. Once generated, users can save the image and look at what galaxies were used in the image. I’ve used Lost At E Minor as an example for the galaxy images. Now go Galaxify!

A little cardboard here, a gallon of black paint there, and some tape and cotton rags down here – now time to destroy and photograph these sculptures!  We all need a little abstract and modernism in our lives, which Zander Blom has envisioned in his installation/photography The Drain of Progress.

The prints are accompanied by a book representing bombastic interpretations of the photographic documentations such as art depictions in books, blending in an imaginary pomp status. Blom has reflected with “…reproductions led to a desire to mimic the photographic mediation evidenced in these publications. In my world of books the actual works didn’t have to exist, because the photographs were all I had access to …”

Beauty comes in all shapes and forms, which is revealed in the photography series by Russian photographer Alexander Khokhlov. Along with make-artist Valeriya Kutsan, both collaborated to capture a moment of beauty in black and white. Intricate patterns and smooth, realistic objects on powdered faces make Weird Beauty a lovely sight to gaze and contemplate.

While some look at maps for direction guidance, Fernando Vicente clearly had something else on his mind. His acrylic on map paintings showcase an impressive and creative balance between maps and art. Whether it be painting an animal or person, Vicente portrays a new aspect of cartography and illustration.

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, right? True when one is bound to a mark of secrecy, guilt or regret, but Candy Chang’s Confessions invites people to confess about whatever troubles their mind. People anonymously shared their confessions on wooden plaques in the P3 Studio at The Cosmopolitan.  Along with her team, she exhibited the wooden plaques by hanging them on the walls and also painting select responses onto large red canvases.

Candy Chang stayed at the hotel for a month, gathering over 1500 confessions for her art gallery, which ranged from mostly love to fear. The art installation showcased from July 19 to August 12. Her website described the project as a ‘cathartic sanctuary for this temporary community and help us see we are not alone in our quirks, experiences, and struggles as we try to lead fulfilling lives’. What’s one of my regrets? Living about 30 minutes away from this art installation and not knowing about the gallery until it ended.

Located in Magong, Penghu County, Taiwan, the rainbow bridge stands solid and fresh, reflecting its neon lighting onto the simmering water below. Passersby can wander onto the bridge while gazing at the rainbow’s reflection, which creates a serene and enchanting feeling. Simply breathtaking and illuminating, this is the perfect place for a night of adventure and family/friend attractions or maybe just some thinking time alone.

I feel like tracing a pattern on this, it looks so entertaining. This installation, the Mending Project, consists of Chinese scissors suspended from the ceiling, pointing downwards, while artist Beili Liu sits below sewing cloth. The hovering, massive cloud of scissors alludes to distant fear, looming violence, and worrisome uncertainty, described by the artist herself. During this live installation/performance, Beili asks visitors to cut white sheets and offer the section to her to sew together. As seen in the pictures and video, Beili calmly sews while scissors hang dangerously above her during her performance. She balances fear of the hanging scissors with the soft, calming, aura of sewing.

Though the food resemblance is tempting, you might want to take a second look. What’s a pita bread doing wrapping up pencils and pens instead of food? The appetizing pencil holder was inspired by Ashtanur, a local pita bread from Jerusalem. When the pencil holder is laid out, leather sections appear to hold anything: from pencils to paint brushes to scissors. A ring can be attached to hold keys or flash drives. While Ido Mohar’s design for this versatile product is a new approach in gathering writing utensils, it sure also makes me hungry.

Looking up at the sky once in a while can give a new perspective on life. Straight Up, the photography collection of Cameron R. Neilson, does give that characteristic of giving something old a new outlook. The camera’s angle provides a different mindset of buildings and streetlights, giving a sense of exhilaration in architecture. Cameron defies the natural order to show the abstract features in everyday life.
