It’s great when you meet a good solid all-round cool person, and when you’re asked ‘when did you guys meet?’, you can’t remember. That’s because it doesn’t matter, you just liked each other straight away. The same goes for Twenty Eleven’s art and his observations. He’s got an individual style, but when I first saw it, it reminded me of Basquiat.

I have an ongoing collaboration with these legends. It’s great to see my art expand to new formats and products. Perth has sun about eight months of the year, so these are invaluable. Read more

A buddy of mine gave this to me a couple of weeks ago. I was having dinner at his house after he returned from the US and he had a good bank of duty free booze. We got stuck into that and then watched this. Nothing beats a good skate video. I used to skate a little bit when I was younger and have always loved the art of it. Skateboards make the best damn noises. There’s a lot of local talent from Perth on here and I love seeing places that I’ve used functionally being used as skate park.

This is what I I’ve been listening to while I’ve been painting lately. It’s a Ninja Tune podcast, so I can’t really go wrong, can I? It’s as though this DJ is in your house playing great music to suit whatever you’re doing or feeling. Puts me in the right mood to paint and makes doing the house work a breeze. I love this and anything by Aloe Blacc. That guy is just beautiful.

With so many photographers these days making over-stylized digital images, it’s great to see someone like Marlene Marino still working in 35mm. Her use of only natural light, and her languid, straight-forward framing result in intimate, grainy, and candid-feeling pictures that feel like they’ve come out of a forgotten drawer somewhere. It’s a fact, people who don’t like clutter don’t collect plush and vinyl toys. The myriad of sizes, shapes, colours and textures in any collector’s display would put any minimal loving layman into a tizzy. Read more
I haven’t bought a CD in a while but I was strolling down Wellington’s Cuba Street looking for a bit of inspiration the other day when Liam Finn’s music tapped me politely on the shoulder and dragged me into the music store. Liam is New Zealand music royalty, of Neil Finn descent, although — with his wild hair and beard — he’s looking a bit more like a young Jesus these days. The record is made with the help of an analogue loop machine, and you’ll find the kind of stunning instrumental crescendos that I haven’t heard since The Beatles Hey Jude. He engages emotionally and spontaneously, with both skill and showmanship.
Love it or loathe it, you’ve got to admit that the ruffled blouses and strict pencil skirts on television series Gossip Girl give you a guilt-free reason to watch. 25-year-old former model Abigail Lorick was approached to ghost design the Eleanor Waldorf Collection by using her budding real life label Loricklady. The press surrounding the show has boosted her profile and her new collection featuring all the Upper East Side trimmings is greatly anticipated.
