A few years ago, some friends and I were sitting around complaining about what a shithole our country has become. So we decided to take a stab at fixing it. The result is Good Virus, a documentary all about being nice. We filmed a lot of very smart people telling us the advantages of being nice and giving us concrete examples of what we can do without breaking the bank or taking too much time away from our friends and families to make a difference. Maybe if people learn to be a little nicer to each other, then we could get things back on track.

A friend of mine emailed me The Butterfly Circus a while back. He knows that I have a soft spot for things that harken back to days gone by. It seems that in the old days, especially the great depression, people had a better set of values than they do now. Read more

When I came across this challenge on the Good website, I was floored. I’m a big fan of crowd sourcing and how powerful the small things in life can be. I believe that a million tiny acts of kindness can have more impact than a few great big ones. Not only does it help people out, but it encourages people to keep doing it.

At one time, this documentary was getting a lot of buzz. It’s both a fascinating milieu and flawlessly executed. I have an obsession with obscure hobbies that create huge subcultures where the fans would give anything to be Jim Richman for a day, a person who most of us would never hear of if it weren’t for beautiful little films like this My favorite line in the whole movie is: ‘Lance Armstrong is the Jim Richman of the bicycle world’. It sums up the whole film for me.

I love this school of photography. It references the old masters while simultaneously being completely modern. Ever since art students were introduced to Joel Peter Witkin, it became fashionable to at least play with this vein. However, most never give their work the personal touches to make it their own like Fredrik Odman does. Nor do they have the attention to detail or flawless craft to bring it to this level. Read more

I think that people ought to to be nicer to one another. The thing that irks me the most is that people readily buy into Leo Durocher’s famous misquotation, ‘Nice Guys Finish Last’. Nothing could be farther from the truth. So when I stumbled across this site, I was elated. It’s great to see talented and smart people like Tim Kring show us that we can be nice and also cool. My favorite part is the Deny Access button!

I’m enjoying the writing on the recently launched The Epi-Cure blog, which discusses the ‘latest scientific studies on health and nutrition’, and features interviews with ‘expert scientists, dieticians, and nutritionists’. The site’s founder and editor, Michelle Grey, also runs tasty, healthy recipes from New York chef Benjamin Towill, including today’s installment: Stuffed Zucchini Flowers [above]. Hmmm hmm. Read more
