I’ve been familiar with Reuben Negron’s work for a number of years, but I was completely taken when I recently saw a selection of watercolors from his two most recent solo exhibitions at Like the Spice Gallery in Williamsburg.

The works consist of stunning, hyper-realistic yet somehow dreamlike renderings of couples or individuals in what appear to be highly personal, intimate settings. They are often naked, sometimes having sex, sometimes alone, and the themes that Negron is dealing with all seem to be connected to deep intimacy, natural sexuality, psychological dynamics (even within the context of a lone individual), and revelation (as opposed to exhibitionism). But it’s the feelings that the works pull forth that carry a weight and universality, elevating the experience of the work and imbuing it with a kind of natural and universal human holiness.

Quite simply, this was the most powerful movie I’ve seen in a long, long time. It altered my mood for a full two weeks after watching. Margaret is the second feature written and directed by Kenneth Lonergan (writer/director of You Can Count on Me, and a prominent playwright and screenwriter).

Featuring Anna Paquin, Mark Ruffalo, Matt Damon, and Allison Janney (who gives such a heart-stopping performance in only a single, early scene that her character’s presence is palpably felt for the entire film), Margaret is a forceful, elegant, beautiful, and at times extremely shocking meditation on tragedy, or more accurately, on the things that happen to/upon us and the ways in which we do or cannot reconcile them into a functioning notion and practice of existence.

The tracks move between driving house beats, electro-symphonic, neo-futuristic synth classicism, processed, layered vocals that turn into waves of mood, subtle touches of a “world music” sound, and even live strings and horns played by the composer-producer duo that blend seamlessly into the overall progression. The pieces move in and out of each other to create an evolving sonic vista that feels like the aural equivalent of traveling through alternatively deep, warm, pulsing reaches of outer and inner space, and all with a beautiful attention to shimmering production detail.

(Full disclosure, I’ve been involved with this project on a music and editing level for some time, precisely because it’s such a powerfully original piece of human expression. I’m really just an enormous fan). Did I mention you’ve never seen anything like it?
