Alice Devine’s work centers around exploring human behaviour. A Couch in Skegness is a collection of short stories and fillers written and illustrated by Devine and is consequently quite a dark, saddening look into the lives of the lonely. Her witty, subtle humor, combined with her amusing drawings, result in a clever, entertaining and sympathetic observation into life in the internet age.

Tara Darby’s work spans fashion, music, journalism, advertising and fine art. I’ve chosen Elba Campers, a personal project, because it reveals her sense of warmth and her want to document the world she is immersed in.

Seemingly average ‘holiday snapshots’ of caravans, campsites and the people who make themselves at home in these places, reveal a real understanding, and have ‘a feeling of personality rooted in the moment’. They leave an almost overwhelming sense that everything is okay.

American artist Noah Doely’s time-consuming method of capturing an image using the ancient wet collodion process really pays off when the final photograph is developed.

Every step of the way, from the concept, to the set design, to working with ambrotypes and tintypes, the process is tenuous and unpredictable. But it results in a physical feel to the photograph, one which just can’t be reproduced any other way. My favourite is The Man on The Moon, which explores our fascination and struggle with the unknown.

London-based, Spanish visual artist and designer Ana Montiel’s most recent project Visual Mantras is a limited-edition book in which she explores repetitive drawing.

Her interest in repetition manifests itself into a set of geometric drawings — colourful and beautiful — that reflect the natural ebb and flow of life. Likewise, her interest in circular shapes is inspired by everyday life, nature, and relationships. Her record sleeve design for Cineplexx, gives us a glimpse of how this inspiration may begin to evolve into the beautifully intricate work she creates.

Just finishing at Brighton with a degree in Illustration, Katie Scott is one of my favourites from this year’s graduates. Her intricate watercolors resemble medical drawings, but with a closer look, reveal beautifully surreal diagrams of hybrid creatures.

Her subtle use of colour and her immaculate eye for detail allow for her interests in early science, and the world’s uncertainty in this area, to come alive in her drawings.

I recently had the pleasure of working with Manuel Vázquez when he photographed some pieces of my work.

His use of contrasting lights was one of the reasons the resulting photos were so enchanting, as he has a way of isolating objects and people: suspending them in darkness. His recent project, Traces, sees him explore his fascination with the idea of spectatorship. Using these high contrasts, he creates a visual code of ‘the ordinary’, highlighting the question of surveillance cameras.
