In 1949, renowned LIFE photographer Gjon Mili visited Pablo Picasso in the South of France. Using a small flashlight in a dark room, Picasso created wildly free and fluid drawings while Mili snapped away. The resulting images are, erm, electric. Read more

Last week marked 25 years since the Chernoyl atomic disaster. It remains the world’s worst nuclear accident, with humans able to start repopulating the area in about 600 years. Here’s a haunting series of before and after photos from around the area. It’s pretty awe-inspiring that despite the region remaining radioactive, nature has still managed to reassert itself. Trees have pushed through thick concrete and there is a very healthy population of wolves, deer and boar. This is the type of take-over bid that I salute. Read more
David Maisel’s photoseries entitled History’s Shadow explores art objects from antiquity in a new light. He photographed x-rays of the Getty Museum’s permanent collections that had been taken for the purpose of art preservation. His photos create a detachment from the original artwork, while illustrating how each piece is still alive. The results are serenely beautiful. Read more
