Tilda Swinton. That’s really all I need to say and your head fills with images, right? She’s a force to be reckoned with, a true chameleon, and she is perfect in whatever form she adopts. She’s always unmistakably … Tilda. The Tweets in this account capture her preternatural essence beautifully, cleverly, and at times hilariously. An example, which resonates especially well: ‘Are you prepared for the coming winds? I am wearing a shawl made entirely out of the hair on my head-my ravaged scalp has since cooled’.

I’m going to be polite and refrain from using the ‘C’ word here, but it’s that time of the year again. We all know someone who’s just impossible to buy for, but I’m not one of those people. In fact I’m pretty easy to please and usually when these occasions roll around I’d be quite happy with just one solid gift. Thanks to the magical land of Facebook, this gem was brought to my attention. The Slayer Christmas Sweater. Damn! I said it, but it was a quote, ok. I mean, this is so many great things rolled into one. It’s truly a gift that would keep giving. So I thought I’d share it with you, so you could make someone’s (my) dreams come true.

On August 7, Antony & the Johnsons released a new album of live orchestral versions of some of their best songs, featuring arrangements by Nico Muhly, Rob Moose, Maxim Moston and Antony. In addition to these splendid reworkings and a very interesting, humorous, and informative speech from Antony, is the achingly gorgeous title track, Cut the World. As beautiful as the song is, with Antony’s soaring vocals, the sweeping strings, and lilting brass, the video for the song is a magnificently disturbing work of art.

Starring the inescapably creepsy Willem Dafoe, the video, directed by Nabil Elderkin, depicts a scene of shocking violence in the corporate world. Game of Thrones’ Carice van Houten provides a chilling portrayal of an apparently disgruntled secretary. Marina Abramović makes a brief, but remarkable cameo near the end of the video, appearing as perhaps an instigator or conspirator. So shocking is the video that postings of it on YouTube have received expressions of outrage and condemnation from viewers who took it all too literally. Perhaps more people need to be familiarized with the concept of the willing suspension of disbelief. Then again, perhaps their disbelief was so well suspended that they fell for the film hook, line, and sinker. Whatever the case, well done Nabil Elderkin and crew.

Last night, I had the great luck of catching Lady Aiko in the act of working on her new mural on Houston Street. The wall, which was home to a famous Keith Haring mural back in 1982, has been home to a number of great murals in recent years. As wonderful as it has been to have this area brought to life by the likes of Os Gemeos, FAILE,Retna, and JR, there has also been a lot of resent from people who wanted the original Keith Haring mural to always be there.

The mural that received the most outrage was by Shepard Fairey. Fairey’s May Day mural was extensively defaced by enormous tags and huge panels of the wall were even removed, to the extent that the entire lower half of the mural ended up being covered in plywood paneling. This seemed to be more of a personal attack against Shepard Fairey than it was against the mural itself. Here’s hoping that Lady Aiko’s beautiful work doesn’t draw such a violent response.

Sometimes I come across an artist who makes me wonder why I’d ever bother to open Photoshop or pick up a pencil or needle and thread or camera ever again. One such artist is New York-based illustrator, Sam Spratt.

I’d been seeing his work around Tumblr quite a bit and his illustrations are just stunning. His portraits are so insightful that I expected this to be the work of a well-seasoned graphic artist, so imagine my surprise when I found out that Spratt is in his early 20s. His age hasn’t prevented him from already gathering an impressive list of clients, such as MSNBC and Warner Music. I realize that it serves no purpose for us to compare ourselves to other people and put ourselves down as a result, because we all have different viewpoints and talents and different things to bring to the table. So I keep on doing what I do anyway, because I know it’s going to resonate with somebody.

Have you ever wished there was a unique place where you could take a date or a friend to really knock their socks off? Do you dream of clandestine, candle-lit whisperings over expertly crafted cocktails? If so, then I have just the place for you, but you can’t tell anyone about it. Seriously. Please Don’t Tell. You won’t find it just wandering down the street. You can’t just walk in there. To get into this exclusive speakeasy, I recommend you dress to the nines and prepare to be screened.

How would you find this place? Let’s say you’re walking down St Mark’s, in the East Village, between 1st Avenue and Avenue A, one fine evening. You might stop into an inconspicuous little restaurant by the name of Crif Dogs. I hear they have a really great hot dog there and you might even try one, but you’re not going there for the food. Once you step inside, you’ll notice a phone booth to your left. You and your friend should step inside and pick up the phone, which may lead to your gaining admittance. You didn’t hear any of this from me, though.

Do you ever get bored of just going out to the same old clubs and events and wish for something with a little more pizazz? Shien Lee, the glamourous mastermind behind Dances of Vice knows just how you feel. Since 2007, Shien has been bringing her sparkle to the nightlife of New York, to create fun, memorable events that attract people from all walks of life.

Each event comes with a theme and Lee carefully curates the acts who will lend their talents to each one. Enthusiasts from around the world arrive in elaborate costumes to be dazzled by burlesque performers, vaudeville acts, and entertainers of various other stripes. You never know who you’ll run into there and I’ll never tell. I can also guarantee that you’ll never forget.

From the opening moments of Iconoclast, I knew that I was in for one hell of a ride. This documentary is neither for the easily offended nor the feeble minded. It is a rather colourful, at times psychedelic look at the work, exploits, and infulences of Boyd Rice, straight from the man himself. There’s never a dull moment, which is just as well, as it clocks in at four hours. So grab the bottle of Jack, grab a big bag of chips, and light the Tiki torches.

My friend Wren will be there again this year, selling his Purevile goodies. Last year, Amy Sedaris was there signing her most recent book, so I got to fulfill one of my wishes in meeting her. This year, having outgrown their previous venue of the Metropolitan Pavilion, the event takes place at 82 Mercer St, between Broome and Spring, on Saturday, December 10th, from 11 am to 8 pm, and Sunday, December 11th, from 11 am to 7 pm. Get there early for one of their highly desired goody bags!

Then in 2010 came Exit Through the Gift Shop, the insightful, documentary into the colourful world of Thierry Guetta, a.k.a. Mr. Brainwash. You might say that Exit Through the Pet Shop is a combination of the two. I would say that it’s a parody of Mr. Brainwash’s film, if he wasn’t already a parody of himself. This film, starring Keyboard Cat, is bound to go down in film history as the best portrait of the artist as a young cat.
