These freakishly beautiful and realistic David Bowie Dolls are the work of New York-based author and skier E.V. Svetova. Featured on the DeviantArt site (under the name Katyok), Svetova doesn’t make the 70cm high polyurethane resin dolls themselves but customises them with paint and Yamamoto-like style. Sadly, they’re not for sale, instead they are ‘created by me for my own enjoyment as a humble tribute to the artist I admire. Unless you are David Bowie, I cannot make a custom Bowie doll for you’.

Richard Saja is an accomplished textile designer whose work involves embroidering quirky, brightly coloured patterns on old traditional French toile. Saja transforms historic, rather bland, 18th century figures by embellishing them with Maori face tattoos and clown outfits. One might even find a mohawked Victorian lady dressed as punk-rocker. His original, one-off creations, have landed him partnerships to create designs for some of the biggest retailers in the fashion world: Opening Ceremony and Bloomingdales, among them. His designs feature reguarly on his blog, Historically Inaccurate.

Ok, so this might not be your kind of thing, but it’s still funny. Rosie Vandenberghe from Canada designs these washable, white cloth, 100% absorbent menstrual pads with what she describes as ‘a pretty print’. There are two choices in size: a ’14 inch hot carpenter’ or a ’12 inch hot cowboy’ and with prices between $6 (AUD) and $9 (AUD) that’s kind of a bargain. For those of of you who wouldn’t mind a hot stud in their pants once a month, you can order your own from Vandenberghe’s Etsy Store. There are loads of other pads to choose from, too. I’m thinking the Leopard print: Miami style!

Brusspup is the master of optical illusions. His latest video, released through his Brusspup YouTube channel, shows a really simple yet very clever optical illusion using anamorphic projections. The trick, which is pretty mind-bending, are skewed photographs sitting on a flat piece of paper, which is then filmed at an angle where the object looks 3D.

When the object is turned, you discover the object is only 2D. A great magician never reveals his secrets. However, Brusspup generously offers high resolution files of the Rubik’s cube, shoe and tape, so you can print them out on 8×11 paper, trim and try it for yourself at home.

Fast-emerging as London’s favourite womenswear and accessories designer, Sophie Hulme is known for understatedly chic bags. Recently, she teamed up with the iconic luggage brand Globe-Trotter for a second time adding new sizes and injecting more colour along with her sharp, modern aesthetic to her existing range for them. As she said in an interview with Vogue UK: ‘Globe-Trotter is such a great company that I didn’t want to see the collaborations end after just one season’. For the first time in Globe-Trotter’s history, Hulme re-designed the handle for her Autumn/Winter 2012 collection (pictured below) to include her signature brass hardware. Each piece is completed with a signature striped silk lining, coordinating with Hulme’s ready-to-wear collection.

Estonian architectural firm, Salto, constructed a 170 foot long trampoline for the Archstoyanie festival in Nikola-Lenivets, Russia. The festival, which focuses on architecture and the forest, is talked of as a smaller, Russian version of Burning Man.

The trampoline road installation, nearly the length of a city block, was designed by Maarja Kask, Kaili Luik and Ralf Looke and dubbed Fast Track. The designers explain: ‘Fast Track is an integral part of park infrastructure. It is a road and an installation at the same time. It challenges the concept of infrastructure that only focuses on technical and functional aspects and tends to be ignorant to it’s surroundings. Fast Track is an attempt to create intelligent infrastructure that is emotional and corresponds to the local context’.

American fashion designer Marc Jacobs shows no sign of slowing down. A fragrance and accessories empire, a ready-to-wear collection, now a chain of retail book stores, appropriately named Bookmarc.

The first Bookmarc boutique opened two years ago on New York’s trendy Bleecher Street. During an era of e-books on iPads and Kindles, his store saw a profit in the first six months. Jacob’s business partner, Robert Duffy, wasn’t surprised. As he told WWD magazine: ‘when you’re looking at photos, art or fashion, you need a book. I need it in front of me, I need to touch it and I think a lot of people are like that’. After the success of his New York store, Bookmarc opened on London’s Audley Street, followed by another on Place du Marché Saint-Honoré in Paris. Among shelves generously stocked with poetry, fiction, memoirs and cookbooks are also iPad covers, digital accessories areas, stationary and rare, limited-edition books that are particular to each city.

Three Squared, a real estate development company, is planning America’s first 20-unit, 26,000 square feet, multi-family condo constructed from retired shipping containers in Rosa Parks, Detroit.

The structure is designed by local architect, Steven Flum. All 93 shipping containers are made of steel and wood and are planned to have their own energy efficient systems that include ductless heating and air system, tank-less water heaters and other energy saving amenities to reduce energy costs by 80 percent. Leslie Horn, Three Square’s CEO says: ‘Our company marries the trend toward sustainable green housing solutions with the problems of escalating building costs and a surplus of unlikely yet durable, versatile, widely available, economical and code-friendly shipping containers’. The development is set to cost $3.4 million and will break ground in Spring 2013.

Alec Weitl, a 19 year-old cat lover from Seattle, is the imagination behind the amazing Tumblr, Sexy Sweaters. A year after he dropped out of university , Weitl turned his love of trolling Tumblr pages into designs for sweaters: from Lady Gaga and Justin Beiber headshots to close-ups of money, pizza, a drunk Lindsey Lohan and King Tut.

The images attracted 100,000 likes within the first few days but what’s extraodinary is that nome of the sweaters actually exists. A true product of the social media age, they are virtual, available only as images. Which is not to say Weitl isn’t thinking about about putting Sexy Sweaters into production. A collaboration with Paul Rowland at Ford Models, scouting out manufactures in Russia and China, and rumours of Nicola Formichetti as a potential backer are all signs that we could get our hands on the ‘sexiest sweaters in the whole fuckin’ world’ very soon.

Especially when it comes to beauty enhancement. Forget anti-wrinkle creams and a healthy, antioxidant-filled, low cholesterol diet. Think instead of a gadget that lifts your nose up by applying electric vibrations, a Hannibal Lecter look-alike mask to get rid of smile lines, or something that fits like a drain plug – or an arcane sex toy – in your mouth to exercise the cheeks. How low can your self-esteem go?

Their intention in juxtaposing a frighteningly antiquated excerpt from the Latter Day Saints handbook, condemning sex between anyone other than a married man and woman, with images of two men looking very much like stereotypical Mormon missionaries demonstrating sexual positions, is clear enough. If you can stop laughing.

From the country that’s home to some of the ‘worlds weirdest hotels’ comes the latest in luxury tourist attractions: The Mirrorcube. Located 60 kilometres south of the Arctic circle, in Harads, Sweden, this stunning hide-out, designed by Tham & Videgard architects, is made of light-weight aluminum which is hung around the base of a single tree.

The exterior is camouflaged by mirror walls that reflect their surroundings while the interior is plywood. The windows offer 360 degree views, but to prevent birds from flying into them, an infrared film, visible only to birds, is laminated into the glass panels. The Mirrorcube can accommodate two people and includes a large bed, a small kitchenette and bath, a living room and roof terrace. It’s not cheap – $592 dollars a night, per person. If Sweden’s not your thing, you can have your own Mirrorcube delivered and constructed at your desired destination.

Over the years there have been vintage houses for cats and mansions for dogs. Now, wood-worker and avid bird lover, Jumahl, has designed a series of 1950s Shasta-inspired campers for birds. Each camper is constructed with durable marine-grade plywood. The aluminum door is both a design accent and a deterrent to squirrels, while the curved awning is just pure style. There is even a slide-out bottom tray for easy cleaning. Since the camper birdhouses went on sale thru Etsy, most have been have snatched up, leaving only the turquoise ones in stock. If you’re interested, you can buy one here.

Tokyo-based architectural model designer, Akinobu Izumi, wanted to do something creative in between her building projects. Using her skills and tools, she started making intricate and beautifully crafted miniature sculptures within tiny tiny glass bottles. Izumi starts by drawing what she wants in each bottle. She then draws the cutting directions using a computer program for her guided paper cutting machine to make a few test cuts. After many adjustments, a precision cut can be made over and over again. Assembling each item in the tiny bottle, using special glue and tweezers, is a painstaking process. Depending on the complexity of the design, it can take as long as a few days.

Fred Le Chevalier started posting photos of his work on MySpace in early 2000. Now more than 3000 of his collages can be found all over the stone walls of Paris’s Montmartre, Belleville, and Le Marais districts, as well as in his hometown, the mecca of bande dessinée, Angouleme. ‘Putting my drawings on the walls of the city is the only way to share and to talk with all the people, he said in an interview with Street Art Paris.

‘We walk very fast in Paris … we don’t always have time but sometimes when you see something on the wall you can stop for one second or for ten seconds and slow down … I like this kind of poetry on the street’. The street artist has certainly captured the French public’s imagination. Last year, his first-ever solo gallery show at Le Houle Oups sold out in under an hour. Le Chevalier is also part of the Street Art Without Borders project, so his paintings can be found on the streets of Germany, Denmark, Brazil and Tokyo.

If you remember the 90s, then you’ll definitely remember the song Smack My Bitch Up by The Prodigy. It is known that different tracks and vocals were sampled and altered in the process of making the song. But just how many samples and to what effect?

Ukranian music producer, Jim Pavloff, managed to put together an authentic recreation of the song using Ableton Live. He started by recreating The Prodigy’s original process using more modern software. He then copied, pasted, stretched, cleansed and manipulated the samples and original synth parts until The Prodigy rave hit emerged.

Montreal-based artist Beth Frey knows that, deep down, a lot of people would like to be as famous as Andy Warhol. So she started a business through her Etsy shop offering a personalized drawing of you, a unicorn, and Andy. Why a unicorn?

‘You do it because of Warhol. Warhol made you do it’ says Frey. ‘So you ride the unicorn of success with Andy, even though he’s already bored of you’. OK. If you want your very own portrait, all you have to do is send in a photo of yourself here and cite your special requests: colour, background, custom celebrity ‘sandwiches’ (for an additional fee). Voila! And if you don’t want to be touched by Andy Warhol but have Justin Bieber mounted on your steed instead, then Frey offers that too.
