This is the Beginnings and Endings project. It’s a collaborative, interactive world map to help my Melbourne-based band Brightly share our debut album, for free. We wanted to prove that independent artists can still make a mark by throwing a metaphorical paper aeroplane and seeing how far it goes. When you join up, you get our new single, Preflight Nerves, and a unique code. You can share the code with your friends, and track each kilometre as it bounces around the world. When ten connections are made, you get the album for free. Everyone wins.

Melbourne-based five piece Pourparlour have pulled together a riotous self-titled debut EP. Between blistering guitar solos and a bold, defined sound (recorded and mixed by Matt D’Arcy at Sing Sing and Basin Studios, and mastered by Crystal Mastering) the four-track is well worth your attention. This is smart pop. It is rhythmic, playful, melodic and damn catchy.

I’m loving The Dust We Share from Melbourne band, Bare Toes Into Soil. There is something really gripping about the melody in the pre-chorus: it’s discordant and anxiety provoking. It hints at a darker message behind the track, which revolves around the powerful vocals of Lyndal Barry and the tight production of Kim Lojoie.

Bursting with frenetic energy, the lead single from Skyways Are Highways double-A side, If You Get Caught We Never Met, opens with actress Anastasia Michael clutching a glass of red wine like a lifeline. What follows is three minutes of riotous 60′s inspired punk joy. Lead by Eli Hood on vocals, Angie Rose on drums, and Matt Miller on bass, the track is a glass of freezing cold water aimed directly at your face. Get ready to dance at your desk, friends.

There is something hypnotic about the voice of Renee Cassar, one half of Melbourne-based indie pop darlings Private Life. Alongside Jamie Barlow, of The Melodics fame, they have crafted an incredible single with Follow The Sun. Cassar’s vocals drift, desolate, against the stark background of crunching guitars, while the pounding rhythm makes my heart race. It is trapped inside my head, and I fucking love it.

Having being asked to play the Parklife music festival after just one gig with his main project, I’lls, Simon Lam’s side project, Nearly Oratorio, came dangerously close to sliding under the radar. After Way Too Peaceful was played on radio station Triple J’s Home and Hosed show a couple of weeks ago, however, I am cautiously optimistic that his incredible debut EP, Showers, will get all the acclaim it so richly deserves.

I am Charlie, one half of Melbourne-based electro indie pop duo, Brightly. We recently teamed up with director Mike Frencham and photographer Samara Clifford to make the film clip for our new 7″ single, Sarah. We used ten litres of paint, eight cans of powder paint, six salad rolls, four bottles of water, two blocks of chocolate and one freezing cold North Melbourne warehouse. The result is this video above and the vinyl is available via Bandcamp.

Marina Lambrini Diamandis, better known as Marina and the Diamonds, has recently dropped her sophomore album, Electra Heart. A departure from the indie folk sound of her debut, the album captures the kind of synth driven pop that makes me dance like a idiot in my car, most notably to the brilliant single Primadonna.

Working in a ‘poetic and melancholic post-situationalist tradition’, London-based artist Robert Montgomery hijacks billboards to create pieces that challenge modern society, fame, advertising, and our consumerist culture. His pieces are as moving as they are subversive, and should be celebrated as much for their form as for their message. Brilliant.

The video for A Ghost Train’s track Chemin Vert was constructed out of panoramic images, painstakingly pulled and manipulated from Google Street View. Described as ‘a trip on the road at supersonic speed spanning across five continents and four seasons’, the result is as riveting as it is inspiring. Fantastic.
