The appeal is beautifully simple: the juxtaposition between the words and art –ranging from traditional painting to radical installation –is not merely aesthetically-pleasing but rather cerebral.

Hailing from Cape Town, Die Antwoord (Afrikaans for ‘The Answer’) is the rap/rave brainchild of Ninja, Yo-Landi Vi$$er and DJ Hi Tek. Ninja raps, DJ Hi-Tek samples everything from mile.dk’s “Butterfly” to Gillette’s “Short Dick Man,” and Yo-Landi’s childlike bordering-on-chipmunk voice ties it all together.

Think ridiculously catchy hooks with a look that is South-African-trailer-trash meets-Lady-Gaga. Interestingly, Die Antwoord may in fact actually be a continuation of previous conceptual music projects, most notably the conceptual rap experience that was Max Normal.

Though now based in the United States, Simon Birch remains a darling of the contemporary art world in Hong Kong. The majority of his work features immense paintings with figures that seem to be falling or jumping in various degrees of abstraction. John Dies at the End, affectionately known by its creator and fans as JDATE, may have started as a free series of chapters about two college drop-outs experimenting with drugs, but it eventually became such a cult hit that it culminated in a film adaptation that premiered in this year’s Sundance Festival. The appeal? A drug called Soy Sauce promising an ‘out of body experience’, a dash of apocalyptical humor, and a plot that seems to go everywhere and anywhere at once.
