Ever wanted to be in someone else’s brain? My new series, Welcome to the Journal is a trip inside my head and what I think about via a journal I kept a few years ago. Visually, I combined the look of a classic greeting card with a bit of Deep Thoughts, made famous by American writer Jack Handey on TV’s Saturday Night Live, and I touch on themes of fame, celebrity, loneliness, and modern America.

Many things can fuel an artist to create. I Am Not A Hipster follows a singer-songwriter on his cathartic quest to write songs after the death of his mother. This film is an interesting look at the personal struggles of the creative process, all set in the unique world of the San Diego art scene. The movie was a 2012 Sundance Film selection, and is also available for download on their website.

I was lucky enough to catch the Alterna-Punk band Future Of The Left on tour in St. Louis this winter while I was home for the holidays. I have been a fan of Andy ‘Falco’ Falkous for years, going back to his previous band Mclusky. He is a force of nature. This show featured a blistering hour and a half set full of songs from all of their albums, as well as a couple Mclusky songs. The show culminated with some audience members getting on stage to help the band play out the last song. ruly one of my most memorable concert experiences. Their most recent video for I Am The Least Of Your Problems is on their website, and they are apparently in the studio recording new music as you read this.

Jad Fair is an underappreciated American icon. You may not know him by name, but his old band, Half Japanese, helped shape modern Alternative Rock. Since Half Japanese, Fair has essentially not stopped working. He is as prolific as ever recording new music, as well as drawing and doing elaborate paper-cuttings. His drawings and designs can now also be worn on a t-shirt through his super cool new store.

Thinking of going out to see a Hard Rock/Industrial/Metal band? Chances are Hard Rock Chick has seen them before, and probably more than once. On her website, Hard Rock Chick chronicles her musical escapades and personal epiphanies at shows in a cool take on a classic concert review. She is also the Hard Rock and Metal blogger for the Grammys and always has some special interviews and reports for Grammy season in Los Angeles.

Brian Jones would be proud. We are kind of undergoing a 60s Psychedelic Rock revival in California right now, and I am definitely not complaining. Bands like Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall, White Fence, and now Foxygen keep popping up with really great albums. Foxygen’s latest single, San Francisco, is a fun, somewhat trippy example of what’s been brewing on the West Coast.

I love a somewhat zone-out, hypnotic, Krautrock esque band as much as anyone. It’s probably the best music to work to for me. Beak> is the next great band in that genre and their new album, > >, is one of the major highlights in music this summer. Fans of Portishead and Massive Attack will definitely get into the vibe of Beak>, and both of their albums are worth checking out.

Documentary films and music are the two ways I do most of my learning. This documentary is an incredible mix of both, and unlike any documentary I have ever seen. Rodriguez is an overlooked 1970‘s musician (sounds like an American version of Donovan), who recorded a couple albums and then vanished. He didn’t have much success in the States, but was huge in South Africa, bigger than the Rolling Stones. The film explores the myths of what happened to Rodriguez and tries to solve the story of his whereabouts, while exposing the audience to the unknown and incredible Rodriguez catalogue.

Wallpaper is back! And I used a ton of it in my new Rock Series of paintings. In all of my work, I try to explore the juxtaposition of something innocent meeting something more subversive because to me it’s an exploration of growing up, and the human experience.  In this series, I used kids wallpaper to showcase a history of Hard Rock, while maintaining my own visual style and sensibility.
