Bill Carman is brilliant. He paid me to write that. Seriously, my work though uncategorizeable (is that a word), comes from that mad place that exists in, if we’re honest, all brains and, specifically, mine. Read more

After spending several disappointing hours in and out of Chelsea and Midtown New York galleries, I stepped into a gallery with the lights dimmed, turned a corner, and was transported to a place where I hovered between childhood and adulthood. Hyungkoo Lee had flawlessly executed life-sized reproductions of skeletons. Read more

I’ve enjoyed Gris Grimly’s work for a while now. From children’s books poised on the edge of ‘acceptable’ to completely unacceptable yet embraceable adult work, Grimly has taken up the reigns of artists like Charles Bragg and Edward Gorey for new generations. His latest book, Artum Secretum, is a large sketchbook collection with a good look into his intelligent, twisted mind.

Admittedly, I am a sucker for sweet sound. My favorite guitar solo of all time remains Blue Sky by Duane Allman and Dickie Betts. So when I first heard about this guy playing incredible things on the ukulele, of all things, I was skeptical. When I think of the ukulele, I think tinny. But man, was I wrong.

California-based artist Andrew Brandou draws from the children’s books, as well as the tripped-out, cult obsessed, disillusioned zeitgeist of the 70s when his early consciousness took shape. The storybook-ish quality of his works creates a sort of narrative of the tectonic shifts that have taken place in the psyche of an entire generation — anthropomorphic animals frolic in subtly Japanese-lacquer-inspired landscapes as gas-mask-wearing cops creep, grinning skulls loom, elevated freeways overwhelm the rising sun, and bloody murder scenes remain hidden just beyond the view of the paintings’ innocent subjects. I’m about to reveal my true, nerdy colours to you all. The recently released Google Zeitgeist 2010 gives a fascinating overview of what the world was thinking this year by showing us what it searched. Oh World, Justin Bieber? What were you thinking?

Three piece, cLOUDDEAD, who formed in Cincinnati at the tail-end of the last millenium, fuse traditional hip hop beats with indie, electronica and psy-rock overtones. Doesone and Why?’s layered, poetic vocals cover the personal, political and social elements of their lives; and, above all, their flatout rejection of traditional musical boundaries makes them a quirky and unique act.

I wasn’t aware of who Emilio Pucci was until my work was compared to his for the hundredth time. I’m happy to have anyone make that connection. I’m not a high fashion person. I keep to the basics and feel alright about it. The introduction to his work was mind blowing for me. Not only for the rich colors and patterns, but how those things worked with the human form. It was an interesting revelation, and one that has sparked more interest for me to explore fashion as a medium for art.
