Arteechoke Studios is my freelance illustration studio, based in Cape Town. It is a place of continual experimentation, featuring digital paintings, maniacal sketchbook doodles, and a comic in the early stages of production. My work generally contains elements of the macabre with a splash of humour thrown in for good measure.

I came across the work of South African illustrator, Caroline Vos, in 2011 through her Twitter profile, @Caroline_Vos, and I absolutely cannot get enough of it. Typically featuring caricatured celebrities, her ability to distort her subject yet still maintain its integrity is truly astounding.

I came across this unnervingly brilliant video not too long ago whilst doing an online course on Gamification. Created by Eran May-raz and Daniel Lazo as part of a graduation project from the Bezaleal academy of arts, the video deals with the future of human interaction. A device embedded into ones’ eye allows the viewer to interact with their environment in much the same way as gamers interact with a video game. The video itself is masterfully executed, with exceptional visual effects work.

I literally get weak in the knees when I see Jessica Oyhenart Ball’s illustrations. Her understanding of lighting and handling of form is truly mind-blowing. If all you do today is go to her website, it will be a good day.

Cottonstar is a weekly web-comic created by Cape Town illustrators Ben Geldenhuys and Danelle Malan. The story takes place in a world where global warming has resulted in high seas swallowing up most of southern Africa. It is within this context that the zany pirate crew of the Cottonstar find themselves on a mission to overthrow the regime of the evil Corporation and their army of ninja warriors.

Nothing I say can do this man justice. One literally has to see his work to experience its true awesomeness. Created entirely in Photoshop, Rapoza’s digital illustrations portray creatures of all shapes and sizes, lit so amazingly that you are almost convinced that they are going to climb out the screen, punch you in the stomach, and rip your guts out. His work is truly inspirational.
