My latest body of work is me going with the flow, taking all the things I love and squishing them together on slabs of wood. Gone Bush is a series of work I have been working on for about six months.

It started after reading a series of books called Petticoat Pioneers, a series which records early pioneering stories from New Zealand and Australia. It has evolved into a series of work about discovery, adventure and the mystery of arriving in a new land. Gone Bush opens on April 24 at FortyFiveDownstairs Gallery in Melbourne.

Every now and then I see a piece of art that sets off a chain of fireworks in my head. Micah Lidberg’s art does just that. His psychedelic sci-fi doodles are explosions of colour, texture and pattern. There is no focal point in many of his drawings, so your eyes are left wandering across the landscape of the page. Flox is New Zealand’s queen of the stencil. Her artworks are made up of layer upon layer of flowery, birdy goodness. Her artwork reminds me of bush walks and muddy shoes. Whenever I see one of her paintings, I want to go outside and find some greenness to get lost in.

If you let a bear loose in a lingerie shop, it might look like one of Mica Stills paintings. Stills is a painter based in Wellington, New Zealand.

She uses her dreams as inspiration for her brightly coloured works. Her recent body of work is titled Runaway With Me and will be on show at 19Karen Gallery in Mermaid Beach, Queensland from September 17th.

The Fellows and the Blondies is Kate McCarthy’s new exhibition. McCarthy uses childhood memories and child-like spontaneity to create her painterly painted pieces. She mentions the 1970s series of Sesame Street among her influences.

Her work reminds me of boiled lollies and patchwork quilts. Kate’s next solo show opens on September 17 at 19Karen Gallery in the Gold Coast.

Mattias Adolfsson is the king of sketchbooks. He has more sketchbooks than Imelda Marcos has shoes. I wonder if he ever sleeps.

His pen and ink drawings look like they might have been drawn on a scientific mission with the crew of Jim Henson’s Pigs In Space. Mattias has recently published a book of his sketchbooks which has 160 pages of sketchy goodness.

Anna The Red was born in Japan and now lives in New York. She makes art you can eat. Her Bento boxes feature characters from Dr Suess, Studio Ghibli and Maurice Sendak. I’m not sure whether I want to eat them, or leave them on the mantelpiece to look at until the ants claim them.

Did you have the Australian Women’s Weekly Childrens Birthday Cake Book as a kid. I did. It was the one book that me and my sisters would fight over as kids. We liked looking at the pictures and dreaming of the day when we could get mum to whip one up for our birthdays. Baking and Painting are two of my favourite things. I have been baking and painting my way towards my next solo show titled “Tarts and Flours” an exhibition about, guess what, baking. OMG I love BMD. When I first saw the work of BMD I almost crashed my car. After moving to Auckland from Melbourne, I had thought my days of seeing kick arse street art were over. How wrong I was!
