Dark Matter is a brilliant coffee company that was born this past forth of July. It is associated with (and lives above) the amazing Star Lounge Coffee Bar in Chicago. This last week I was in Michigan with my sister and soon to be brother in law/beer aficionado. We trotted around the micro-breweries of northern MI and our merry little band of travelers (one gets fairly merry when you are tasting flights of 6-8 beers at every pub) found Shorts Brewing Company to be the best of the best. I was given my first couple Sleigh Bells tracks by a friend last Fall and haven’t they blown up since then! The duo will be playing at the upcoming Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago. Their debut album, Treats, has just come out with new, and old (and improved), tracks that are noisy, growly, and sexy fun.

Chicago based artists Adam Brooks and Mat Wilson who make up Industry of the Ordinary are ‘dedicated to an exploration and celebration of the customary, the everyday, and the usual’. Though they may love the status quo, their exploration of it has a delightful tendency to manifest in one of a kind moments and visuals that make the viewer understand that art is an experience. Whether they are swapping facial hair, playing foosball as God, or running for public office in Italy, their projects are always worth checking out.

I have to say I have always been a sucker for a band with an accordion, so when I meet the Minneapolis based Dark Dark Dark in Venice this summer and they not only had an accordion but an upright bass and a cello, I fell in love with their sound. This music is magnanimous, touching and intuitively narrative. It is some sort of mix between Eastern European folk music, jazz and a soulful piano singer, but it doesn’t get lost to any one category that could be used to describe it.

As tea geek, I could go on and on about the purity of the flavor found in Ineeka teas, and describe nuances in a vocabulary usually reserved for wine cellars. However, I am just going to tell you that it is good. Real good! Ineeka is the only tea company in North America that grows its own tea and they use a bio-dynamic growing system to do so (think fair trade and organic growing, but super sized). Read more
Dogs have finally graduated from unwilling fashion victims. You know the ones: strolling the streets with their pink booties, rhinestone collars and ever-popular powder blue t shirts. Now they can stand as distinguished animals, joining the linguistic world and representing a font type. Eurostyle is my favorite. Woof!
If you’re looking for conclusive evidence that we were once visited by furry little creatures from a place far away, stop looking for clues in Steven Spielberg movies and instead check out these remarkable photos of Yugoslavian monuments from the 1960s and 70s that were commissioned by former president Josip Broz Tito to commemorate World War Two battle sites. Arriving two years after their debut, Settle Down City, Old Wounds completes Young Widows’ transformation into a top-shelf rock band firing on all cylinders.
