Social media is playing a vital role for Earth Hour 2011, not only connecting the global community that will take part in the lights-out event on March 26, but driving supporters to commit to doing something more, beyond the hour. A new 60+ app has been launched that allows people to use their iPhone to share with the world the actions they will take to sustain their commitment to the planet once the lights go back on. While I’m not entirely convinced this innovation would last more than a day after being put to task in the Earth Hour Global office, I am impressed by the clever design and minimal environmental impact of the Flashkus — an eco-friendly USB stick pioneered by Russian company, Art. A stolen bag was the original inspiration for this range of goodies made in a sewing shop in Seattle using recycled tyre inner tubes. The logo on each product features a number: the percentage of recycled or upcycled goods used to make that piece. My favourite? Elliot, a stylish and kind-to-the-earth men’s wash bag, made from 92 per cent recycled materials.

Crosby’s father was an Academy-Award-winning cinematographer who shot Tabu and High Noon, amongst other well-known films. Read more

I disagree, but the Tights are not pants manifesto is pretty funny. There’s some history and arguments on why tights shouldn’t be worn as pants, and a downloadable kit with printable flyers to spread the word. A commendable effort. Do you agree tights are not pants? I’m all for tights as pants, as long they’re, ahem, worn well.
